Williams Stays Put, Prospers

FAYETTEVILLE – D. J. Williams was down and confused.

The head coach who recruited him to play tight end at Arkansas, Houston Nutt, took off in late November, along with Danny Nutt, James Shibest, who was Williams’ position coach, and other members of the staff. Williams had been under their guidance for his only season at Arkansas, his true freshman season.

Williams got a taste of new Coach Bobby Petrino’s nononsense approach during winter workouts and faced a quandary.

“A lot of people around the state know that I was thinking about maybe even leaving the school after the coaching change,”Williams said Friday. “I was real close to the Nutts, real close to all that coaching staff.”

The rumor mill was flying in early 2008 that Williams was on the verge of following Nutt to Ole Miss. [read more]
