If what ESPN’s Andy Katz wrote on his blog Friday is true, it looks like Arkansas basketball coach John Pelphrey will finally compete against his former coach.
Katz wrote that Arkansas will be involved in “an odd new tournament to start” the 2009-10 season that will culminate with a doubleheader in St. Louis on Nov. 17. The matchups, Katz writes, will be Memphis-Kansas and Arkansas-Louisville.
The Cardinals are coached by Pelphrey’s coach from his playing days at Kentucky, Rick Pitino.
According to Katz, the four marquee teams will play three home games against “mid- to low-major teams at home” over a two-week period before meeting in St. Louis.
Arkansas associate athletic director for media relations and communications Kevin Trainor said Friday that Katz’s report was a bit premature but that there were ongoing discussions for Arkansas to participate in the event.
Trainor said that no contract has been signed and that the university was working out details with the tournament’s organizers. Pelphrey discussed the possibility of playing Louisville at his postseason news conference in late March. [read more]
