Setting Up the Series:
The premier series in college baseball this weekend sees the top two teams in the SEC West battle it out in Oxford, Mississippi. Arkansas is coming off a series loss against the surging Auburn Tigers, while Ole Miss, the hottest team in the SEC, is coming off consecutive sweeps against LSU and Mississippi State. The Friday night pitching match up will feature Ole Miss’ ace Drew Pomeranz, Baseball America’s Midseason Player of the Year, and Arkansas star Drew Smyly. This weekend will be a rare opportunity see the player widely considered college baseball’s top hitter (Arkansas 3B Zack Cox) versus college baseball’s top pitcher (Drew Pomeranz).
Players to Watch:
Zack Cox – The only thing more discussed than Cox’s stat line (.443 AVG, 7 HR, 45 RBI, 1.187 OPS) is his draft stock. ESPN’s Keith Law projects the Arkansas third basemen to be selected in the top 10 of this year’s draft. Cox has managed to hit safely in 43 of 45 games this season.
Drew Pomeranz – Widely considered the best pitcher in collegiate baseball, Pomeranz is expected to give Ole Miss a series advantage every single Friday. The big lefty has 104 strike outs in 68 innings pitched and opposing hitters have only mustered a .167 AVG. After a rain delay in Starkville last Friday, Pomeranz returned to the mound and struck out 10 of 11 batters. Guys like this don’t come around very often, so if you get the chance, go see him pitch.
