Meyer Leaving Florida – Handwringing Begins

by ElvisHog on December 8, 2010

Florida head coach Urban Meyer has announced that he’s stepping down from the position.

Meyer, 46, informed Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley over the weekend that he was contemplating resigning and the two finalized the plan Tuesday. Meyer told the Gators of his decision during a team meeting earlier this afternoon. UF has scheduled a press conference for 6 p.m. at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium where Meyer and Foley will address the media.

Meyer will remain Florida’s head coach through the Outback Bowl in Tampa on New Year’s Day.

Now fans of larger schools who are really happy with their coach are starting to freak out.

The Mississippi State fans were already a little on edge because they’ve been worried that Mullen has some interest for the University of Miami job. There’s been speculation as to whether he’s talked to them or not and it isn’t sitting well. Now, the Florida job is open. Where Dan Mullen left to come to MSU. It’s bad enough that there’s just a connection to Florida, but after watching the Gators’ offense going south after Mullen left, it has become clear that Mullen was the reason for their offensive success.

That Gator fans want back.

Hog fans temperature on the issue has risen quickly. It’s not rampant, but the people that are worried about Florida coming for Petrino…are really worried about it. I’m not bothered by it, because Mullen’s their first choice. But if Mullen turns it down, then what? Then I’m going to worry.

The thought of losing Petrino at this point makes me ill. My wife jokingly said “if Petrino goes to Florida, we might get Nutt back”. I almost threw up. Even knowing it was a joke…it was awful.

Follow the discussion in the thread. There’s already panic, and justification, and plenty of well thought out reasoning in there.
