The Razorbacks (3-0) host the Utes (0-2) at Baum this weekend, with the first pitch coming today at 3:05. Utah played at #17 Cal last weekend, but rain cancelled the Friday and Saturday games, forcing the teams to play a doubleheader on Sunday. Obviously one series is too small of a sample size to really know much about either team, but here are Utah’s stats from last weekend.
Utah’s starting pitcher this afternoon will be senior lefty Rick Anton. Apparently he’s a transfer because he has no stats from 2010 on Utah’s website. He started one game last weekend and took a loss while pitching 5.2 innings and giving up 1 run on 3 hits. He faced 19 batters and Cal had a .158 average against him. He struck out 5 in the outing.
The big news of the weekend comes from the Arkansas rotation. DVH announced earlier this week that freshman righty Ryne Stanek will get the start for the Hogs this afternoon. Stanek will be the first Razorback freshman to start on a Friday since Nick Schmidt back in 2005. DVH alluded to making this move in his preseason press conferences, but I doubt many people thought it would happen so quickly. DVH, on Stanek-
“He’s a confident kid for being a first-year college athlete and I don’t think he gets all rattled,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. “I guess we’ll find out and that’s what we’re trying to find out. If he gets behind on the scoreboard or behind in the count, let’s see how he handles it. I’d rather find out now than a couple of weeks into conference play that we made a big mistake throwing him out there.”
Junior Geoffrey Davenport will start on Saturday for the Hogs, and freshman Brandon Moore will take the mound on Sunday.
