Our defense on Sept 2nd will hold USC to under 20 points
« on: August 16, 2006, 10:10:21 AM »
I feel that USC will not show an effective running attack in our opener. I feel we can dominate the 1st half and hold on to win the game, and thus hold USC to under 20 points. We win 21-18.....  what a game two weeks and some idle days from now.....

I agree to a certain extent.  I believe the game will be under teh total.

And that is all that really matters. O0

Um, the last time USC was held under 20 points was in 2001 - Pete Carroll's first season.
But if you look at the first game of the season for USC in the last 5 years, they mostly scored in the low 20's.  Last years game against Hawaii was the lone exception.

The following are USC's opening game scores (under Pete Carroll) coupled with season scoring average.

2001

USC 21  San Jose St. 10  Season Average: 24.8

2002

USC 24  Auburn  17  Season Average: 35.7

2003

USC 23  Auburn 0  Season Average: 41

2004

USC 24  Virginia Tech 13  Season Average: 38

2005

USC 63  Hawaii 17  Season Average: 49

I'd say USC will score 24-31 points.

Guessing, I would say the o/u will be about 48... Under would bode well for the hogs. The first half line should be looked at closely too.  Thus, the opposite of last years 1st half.

There is a good possibility that I will be in full drunken mode when the game kicks off....

Luckily, I will be 6 hours from the stadiA.

However, if we get jobbed like VT did 2 years ago...........there's probably going to be a guy on a tractor f.cking some aMm up in Rector, AR.

That is a concern of mine too.  I remember how close that game really was to coming down to the wire.

This (24-31) is more like what I expect from them...I just don't know what to expect from us.   We managed 17 last time...maybe 21-28 this time?  (Hell, that's probably a little optimistic...more like 17-24?)

I think we'll have to hold them to 21 or under to win the game.  Unless there is overtime, I don't see us winning if they score 28 or more.

F'nA.  Jarrett has to draw a double...all night.  Did you see Matt Jones get loose 1 on 1 the other day?   Think he won't get doubled all day every Sunday as soon as the games count?  If we turn Jarrett loose 1 on 1, we deserve to lose.

i think the game will be closer than many in SoCal believe:

HOGS  20
SoCal  17

I am not claiming I am right, I am saying I don't get it.

agreed. we need to double team Jarrett. and when he goes down for a breather, we need to double team Smith.  of course we will probably just end up blitzing the crap out of Booty, and that will be that.

I don't know about us winning, but I do think it will be closer than the spread. Minus last year's USC game, the Hogs always have a knack for playing pretty well against really good teams. They lose, but they play pretty well.

the reason we lost games like that was because we had an OC that couldnt pull out a win (at least not without a miracle-maker like matt jones -- and even then pulling out a win was hit or miss).   now we have a different OC. though i don't know how things will be since this is GM's first season. i hold out hope that we can finally do what all the other great SEC teams can do: win close games

I'm going to be cautiously optimistic with Malzahn until he proves himself, but having a good OC should make the difference. Nutt was painfully conservative.

Correct.

Except for that game.

And the 2000 game at Knoxville.

And a couple of the LSU games.

And several of the games against Georgia.

And...oh well, never mind.

Don't forget the back to back beatings from Ole Miss and Duce MaCalister a few years ago.

You're right on all of those. I was also thinking about when we took Tennessee to overtime on the road, beat LSU at home, beat Texass on the road, almost beat them at home, beat Miss State on the road in Starkville in 2000, beat South Carolina at home in 2001, beat Auburn at home in 2001, lost by 3 to LSU on the road, beat Auburn on the road in 2002, lost to Georgia by 6 in 2004, to Georgia by 3 last year and LSU by 2. All those teams were ranked.

So, is our winning percentage playing close percentage around .600 then?

According to his website, it states he is first in that category:

"SEC leader with .825 % in playing it close since 1998."[/color]

Followed by:

It started in 2001 with an outstanding 4th quarter to defeat highly touted UNLV.  Then, we came back against Tennessee in 2002 on an amazing 92 yard pass that took us to overtime.  There were the furious 4th quarter comebacks against Florida in 2003 and 2004, that allowed us to eventually come back and make it close.  Another great close game happened in 2003, when we were up 2 touchdowns on Kentucky, then sat on our ass until overtime to let them come back and make it close.   And what a finish to that one, baby!  Finally, in 2005, down 2 touchdowns at halftime to 1 year removed national champion LSU, we came all the way back to lose it on a chip shot FG.  But, nobody keeps it close like that special group of guys in the lockerroom right there.
