Re: Last night's Personal Message spam

Last night, each member in the database received three copies of a personal message spam sent by a new user who registered as "Daniel Craig."

The message included several links and a pornographic JPG.

Once we found out what had happened, we took immediate steps to delete these PMs from the database.  This was accomplished before 7 a.m. this morning, so most users never saw the PM itself.

However, because most members have PM notification turned on, they received a copy of the PM (without images) in their e-mail boxes.

Woopig has always maintained an "open" registration system, that does not require an admin to approve new accounts before they can be used.  Unfortunately, spammers have recently begun to take advantage of systems with that kind of arrangement.  This has become an increasingly frequent problem for boards that use the SMF system we use.

We have taken several steps to prevent this from happening in the future while preserving users' ability to use the PM system to communicate privately with other users.  Effective immediately, all new user accounts must be approved by an administrator.  Accounts that appear to have bogus information will not be approved.  In a few days, we will be implementing a new system to make automated registrations more difficult.  And we are taking other steps to ensure that messages such as this will not be sent.

To turn off message notification for PMs, simply log in to your account, click the Profile button at the top of the page, then click Personal Message Options.  Uncheck the box by "Notify by email everytime you receive a personal message" and click Change Profile.

We apologize for the inconvenience and embarassment this may have caused you.

When that picture was taken I was promised that no one else would ever see it.  I feel so humiliated.

I was just embarrassed for Daniel Craig, but since he is just some subhuman spammer, fuck him.  I already turned off notifications.

Isn't 21st century technology great?   Who knew, back in the 20th century, that you could sell people stuff by pissing them off with ceaseless irritating emails?   Back then, we thought, in order to sell people stuff, you should try to make them like you.  How stupib of us.  :stache:

And, thanks, Nhog, for trying to stop this shit.

There is NO WAY this software can get spammed.  The reports on other boards have to be untrue!

It looks like you would have to insert each member name seperately into the "To" field.  Of course, there prolly is a way to do it faster if you are a hacker.
