I am 56, been waiting forever to get to be an old guy so I wouldn't feel bad about being as boring as I am, probably jumping the gun on acting old.  I have already been eating dinner at 4 o'clock on the weekends for 20 years.

I make it a point to get in my truck and drive around town at 20 mph between 7 and 8 AM

The monthly Pujols update.

.240, 10, 45

Not getting better throughout the year like normal, but:

Still on pace for .240, 25, 120

That's not bad.  but even 52 pushes him to 5th all-time and 4th adjusted for steroids.  Still thinks he needs another WS Championship to be the best ever.  At 12 GB and Trout hurt, don't think it's happening this year.

I'll bite.  If he won another ring he is better than Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Stan Musial, etc?

Maybe. I don't know at this point. I do know if he had stayed a Cardinal, and won another title ( which they would have by now), he would have been in the top 3 with the same stats he's producing.

The way he's declining, he needs to retire now for people to consider him the best ever.

HR's - 7th - 5th without Barroid and Arod - Nobody had more in less seasons
RBI's - 10th - Only Gehrig had more with the same # or less seasons
DB's - 12th - Nobody had more in even close to the same number of seasons
Hits - 33rd - Get this, only Ichiro Suzuki has more in the same number or less seasons   :stunned:
IBB's - 1st - I don't count Barroid

That's pretty impressive to be the all-time leader (or 2nd in hits and RBI's) in these categories factoring in seasons played.

As much as I've loved watching the guy, and still root for him, I think folks can't ignore, though, the fall off and shortened effective career.  Yes, Albert may be fastest (or second fastest) to point X in several stats, but career stats are just that; one's total career.

There's something very impressive about guys who kept grinding out the numbers year after year.  Aaron had 713 after twenty seasons (1973) and hit .301 and had 40 HR's that year.  That's impressive any year but especially for an "old" guy in his 20th season.  And he played three more years after that.

Same with Stan and Willie.  Just incredibly impressive the numbers they piled up as they aged.  That's no discredit to Albert.  His body's breaking down and that isn't his fault.  But when people talk about GOAT in baseball, they usually talk about raw, career numbers.  Fans will assign their own asterisks to guys like Koufax (health), Clemente (death), and Feller and Williams (seasons lost to war in their prime, and in Williams' case, two wars) but not enough to bring them into GOAT discussions.  In baseball I think that's still limited to Aaron, Mays, and Ruth (in no particular order) and I don't think that would change if Albert retired this year.

Ultimately, I know you're right, though I think some people throw Gehrig in there, as well as Williams.  But if he retired today, he would still be 1st or 2nd in all 5 of those major hitting categories in terms of career numbers in seasons played.  That's impressive and just highlights how great he was.

I honestly think if he had stayed with the Cardinals his career numbers would be even higher.  Eventually, I'd like to know the REAL reason he left the Cardinals.  I don't think we know it yet and won't until after he retires.  Maybe it's because he knew he was breaking down, and he thought he would last longer in the AL as a DH.  Don't know, though.

He's still my favorite of all time.  Made me a Cardinals fan for 11 seasons, and made me a bigger fan of the Cardinals than the Yankees, which I never thought would happen.  And while he's declining rapidly, he's still getting 100 RBI's every year.

I don't necessarily hate the player, but I do find it quite amusing how the vast majority of fans totally dismiss any suggestion that he was probably using PEDS just like 80-95% of his peers.

One thing to point out, after testing became part of the game, most of the hardcore PED users got skinny.  Not Pujols.  It is a bit ironic that his injuries that have led to his decline in output align with when testing became the law.

The work he has done for Down's Syndrome makes up for any potential indiscretion in my book.  If you've ever spent much time with a Down's person, you realize how unconditional love works.

I think most pro athletes do amazing work for extremely worthy causes. I wish we heard about all of that work, but 1 out of 500 getting arrested is much juicier news.

Personally, I've got no issue with any player that was using PEDs. The use was rampant and just like greenies back in the day it gave those that were using them an advantage. The "legality" was, probably intentional, murky as the owners were eating up the power surge and the crowds that it drew.

I'm not smart enough to know what the next substance athletes will use to gain a physical advantage over their competitors, but I'm positive that there will be one. There is too much money at stake, both for the player and whoever figures it out, for it not to happen.

What's your number then? I'm not just talking about steroids, I'm talking about EVERYTHING that is now considered a PED (i.e. on the banned substances list). I'd be willing to bet that 95% of the "protein mixes" in GNC at that time would have resulted in a positive test.
