Welker not household name, but there's hope

This time last year, pitcher Duke Welker was one the nameless masses clopping their cleats around Pirate City, but he spent the past year making a name for himself in the Pirates organization.

Welker was a surprise addition to the 40-man roster this offseason, having appeared in eight games above Class A in a five-year minor league career. But, at 6 feet 7 with a 96 mph fastball, Welker showed enough progress that the Pirates' front office wanted to protect him from the Rule 5 draft by adding him to the 40-man roster.

Zack Cox started the other day for STL against the Nats. He went 1-3 with 2 K's.

Gentry just had a pretty nasty tumble in the outfield.  Tried diving for a line drive and landed awkwardly.  He had to leave the game...but he might be out for a bit.

Friday’s Pitcher of the Day: Memphis’ Jess Todd fanned six in 3 2/3 innings of shutout baseball. The right-hander has had some ups and downs in his career and perhaps 2012 will be another peak.

Hopefully Jess can put together some good starts and get back into MLB.

The Indians DFAed him last year, he was claimed by the Yankees, who then DFAed him and he was claimed by the Cards.

Padres placed 2B Logan Forsythe on the 15-day disabled list with a broken foot.
He's the first player in the league officially placed on the disabled list, but many more will be coming. Forsythe is expected to be sidelined a minimum of six more weeks after undergoing surgery on his broken left foot earlier this month. The 25-year-old infielder could miss the first few months of the 2012 season, depending on how his rehab goes.

James McCann had a solo homerun on Sunday for the Tigers, too.  I really hope to see the day McCann is catching Smyly for the Old English D.  Hopefully Smyly has a great outing today.

Texas has three young center fielders with legitimate chances to help in 2012: Craig Gentry, Borbon, and Leonys Martin, with odds of contributing probably in that order (even if you might rank their upside in reverse).

Gentry has this Nick Johnson/Roy Tarpley aspect to his career that unfortunately has to be factored in.  He had Tommy John surgery in college.  Since joining the Rangers, there have been right knee and hamstring and left knee and right wrist and thigh and concussion and groin injuries that have cost him time.  This spring alone, he’s been slowed at various times by hamstring and wrist issues, as well as a bout of dehydration that forced him out of Sunday’s game against the Angels in the third inning.

Ron Washington expressed his frustration after that game, suggesting that Gentry needs to stay on the field to earn a meaningful role with this team, an obvious observation but one that resonates when it comes from the manager’s mouth late in camp and involves a player needing once again to prove himself.

When I read that someone has a "Roy Tarpley aspect," I don't think of injuries being their primary problem.

Drew Smyly was just told by Tigers officials that he has won fifth starter job. "I am speechless," Smyly said.

Tigers don't need fifth starter immediately. Smyly was told he will make one start in minors before big-league debut.

Cliff Lee got a ND in his first start. 6 IP, 1 ER (on a wild pitch, somehow), 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Schmidt got roughed up at AA: 4.1 IP, 6 R (6 ER), 6 H, 3 BB, 4 K's (12.46 era, ND)

Keuchel got off to a great start (AAA): 6.0, 2 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 3 K's, WIN

Smyly is starting for the Tigers tomorrow.
