There are probably better youtube channels for hot takes and highlights.

I don't make a habit of watching any of the sports shows anymore...really if you want to see a highlight it's going to be easily found on the net. The commentary as far as I'm concerned is mostly terrible, contrived, and oh the bias. Very few shows feature solid no bullshit opinion commentary and non-fictional news reporting.

I'm not sitting up till 11pm to see a Hogs highlight unless it's just something I really want to enjoy...like when we beat Alabama in football. ESPN's investigative/documentary stuff is mostly excellent and groundbreaking. The sports science bits are pretty cool...um ok. I like Mike and Mike for waking up in the morning and watching/listening to them piss and moan about whatever hot take is for the day and find it amusing they are still talking about the same shit 3 hours later. Greeny is so dainty...he didn't even know what a dirt bike was the other day. Golic had to explain to him it wasn't like a moped that the baseball player crashed. I hate that they dumped most of their other shows on ESPN radio and replaced with mostly boring shit. I don't get to see what's on during the day very often so whatever that is...don't give a fuck. Do they still have PTI, Lebatard, and Kellerman?

Anyway...so far most of the people I'm seeing let go are not especially endearing to me. Ed Werder may be about the only one I'd give above zero fricks about.

Pretty much this (except the M&M part; Greenberg makes me want to kick a cat).  Haven't watched any ESPN TV programs other than games in over a decade.  Used to have their radio on 8-10 hours a day but now it's a cesspool.  The only shows I can listen to are Dari & Mel on Saturday mornings and some of their weekend football programs during season.

I listen mostly to podcasts now, particularly the sports specific ones.  It's nice not to have to listen to 20 minutes of NBA/Golf/Soccer to get to the stuff I'm interested in.  I particularly like the ones made by reporters/writers rather than "personalities" because they focus on information and the games.  ESPN still has some of those but their days may be numbered.  Wish they would have dumped Buster Olney instead of Jayson Stark.

But what is the alternative now.  I sure as hell am not watching Fox Sports with Bayless, Sharpe, Whitlock and Cowherd.  Argument sports TV and all the "hot takes" is the worst.  These days I pretty much watch MLB Network (not High Heat) or listen to podcasts.

None of it. It's all fucking garbage.

Well, Kannell got fired.
But Adnan was guest host, as he regularly does when Russillo is on vacation.

Interesting to see what happens but I think Russillo is keeping the radio show in the same slot.  Probably getting a new co-host.

Kannell was awful. Just horrid. I miss the SVP version of the show. That was the best run on radio ever. Yes. Better than DP in his prime. Better than Kornbeiser.

I agree, fuck Kannell. Rusillo is cool, though. I always wondered what transpired that pushed SVP off radio. I miss that show.

As for TV, I still like Pardon The Interruption and regularly chortle while watch it. Kornheiser has that nuerotic New Yorker Larry David thing going on and Wilbon just don't give a fuck. Long live PTI.

SVP got his own Sportscenter and had to give up the radio show. Not enough time and many of those bits carried over to the TV with Stanford Steve....but I just don't watch. It's an awesome show, but it's too late in the day for me to watch. Guess I'm getting old.

I'll admit it.  The Dan Lebatard radio show makes me laugh.  I love that show when I catch it because they really DGAF at all, even to ESPN management.  Plus they regularly make fun of Stephen A Smiff.

it's about the only thing i listen to anymore. i wonder how much longer they will make it as a national show though. i don't think Dan really cares. he'd be fine just doing a miami only show.

So, what does ESPN actually save financially by cutting these employees?  It doesn't even touch the deficit caused by subscribers cutting cable.  It's like applying a band aid to a severed arm.  I guess it makes shareholders of Disney feel better, that somehow executives are "on top" of the situation.  Aside from that, it does nothing to solve the problems.

I don't think any of these people that they've cut are "brands" that cause anyone to tune in to ESPN..... or the people that were tuning in to someone like Berman and Jackson, were demographics that no one is losing sleep over.    Younger people DO like SVP, I know that for sure.

People tune in to TNT to watch Barkley and that crew but for something like the NFL draft, eyeballs are coming in either way whether it's NFL Network talent or ESPN talent so it really doesn't matter if you have Kiper or Mayock telling you the bench press stats of your 5th round safety.

Costs are costs and you cut them where you can cut them.

Great article in RCP(?) this morning discussing this issue.  Summary:  ESPN paid too much for right to broadcast NFL and NBA events.  Disney saw opportunity to milk the cow and decided to stick people with a slew of Disney channels nobody wants just to get ESPN and watch sports.  Many people discontinuing cable and using other ways to get TV and sports.  Finally, Disney decided to go political and place ESPN solidly in the leftist side of the political spectrum and lost half of their remaining customers.  It will take a few more years; but, they gone.

The RCP (real clear politics) page actually had links to two or three stories on ESPN's woes.  The one you were probably thinking about is below (WARNING: Clay Travis is quoted and says things many of us will agree with):

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/447060/espn-layoffs-stick-sports?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mclaughlin&utm_content=politics-sports

Not much mention is made there of college sports but as more folks cut the cord for traditional cable, and therefore revenues for ESPN decline, when the ginormous TV contracts the Power 5 conferences come up for renewal, what the various networks and cable channels will pay is bound to decline, which could start a lot of dominoes falling.  One consequence may be for games to be available via streaming on a conference or individual school level.  That would likely shrink the number of "haves" even further.  Any deal that a small alumni base private school, e.g. TCU or Vandy, could make would likely pale in comparison to what they've been getting from the Big 12 or SEC.

The show was already pushed to the back burner. Stephan A Smith's radio show was moved from Mad Dog Radio over to ESPN and is being broadcast at the same time. On sat radio you have to listen to Smith for example.

Additional Radio Schedule Changes

Also on January 17:

The first two hours of Russillo & Kanell (1 – 3 p.m.) will move to ESPN Xtra, SiriusXM Channel 81, while the third hour will remain on ESPN Radio Channel 80.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz will air nationally on ESPN Radio and SiriusXM Channel 80 (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) while also airing locally in New York City on ESPN Deportes Radio New York 1050AM (Noon – 2 p.m.).

It's Disney.  They'll probably import some cheap H1B guys and make these folks train them.

This is pretty self congratulatory but Clay Travis has been talking about this for years all the while ESPN has been trying, unsuccessfully, to hammer him.  Sad.

Look at how much they paid the NFL for a shitty Monday night schedule. Why is anyone surprised?

They have overpaid for a product they would never come close to breaking even on.

It sucks for those who lost their job as ESPN is still going to be losing tons of money.

Going to be very interesting to see what happens with the pay subscription and how the cable companies react at the bargaining table.
