First round is only guaranteed contract. Most second rounders end up in the D league or overseas. D league only pays around 30k per year I think but you have the possibility of getting called up. Definitely more money overseas.

Regardless, would be a devastating blow if either left.

We would be a much better program today if guys like Beverly, Townes, Clarke, Young, etc. wouldn't have left early.  I understand it's part of college basketball to have transfers, but we've had a lot of guys leave and not make it.  Beverly finally did, but it took him several years.

Townes and Clarke didn't leave early, their eligibilty was up.

This article is about five years old, but I think it's probably still pretty accurate.

NBA D-League vs. European Basketball: Why don’t more players go to Europe?

Quote
The worst part about basketball players staying in the USA and playing in the D-league is the fact that most D-league salaries range from only $12,000 to $24,000. Average overseas players can get a $65,000 contract with ease.  Depending on the league that players get into in Europe, salaries can start as high as $100,000. Not only is there a big discrepancy between the salaries, but the money made in Europe is typically tax free. The club oftentimes will pay your taxes to the country you are playing in. That American who is playing overseas may also receive credit with the United States government for paying their taxes. Further, most European clubs commonly pay for a player’s living expenses. That includes providing a player with a car and lodging. So the player in Europe can be saved from taxes and the more expensive living expenses.

friend of mine played pro ball in Europe and elsewhere.  Last gig was in Mexico.  paid in cash.     Talked about the many times he taped cash to his body flying back in order to avoid claiming it.    Lived at a resort that you could not leave after dark.   Several of his teammates got rolled.

anyhow, they haddn't been paid in a few weeks.  So my buddy is elected to talk to owner, who's obv got cartel ties.  He tells them they better show up tomorrow for game and that money would be there.   They were paid out of money that was carried in a trash sack.

Dude shortly moved back to states.  Scared shitless.

I can't figure out the financing of it all.

When you see footage on draft day of some super hot shot European guy, it's always empty stands in the background.
I've had European TV feeds before when I lived in another country and I don't recall being inundated with TV games.... so I'm not sure where the big money even comes from.

Apparently they do make some money off TV contracts and sponsors.

They expect to go in the first round?  Isn't that the only one that matters?

Of course if I didn't care anything about school I'd leave as soon as possible and go make money somewhere.  They can probably play in Europe or Israel or somewhere.

I don't follow the tea, they may be great.  Lots of teams have guys like them, only 30(?) slots in the first round.

I think there's only two rounds in the NBA draft.  I also think this is the first or second year that you can undeclare for the draft almost up to the day of the draft as long as you don't hire an agent.

Seems like Pargo played for some Russian team and it was a big contract for that league and I wanna say all he saw of that money was the signing bonus.

Pargo signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with Dynamo Moscow in August 2008.  He left Dynamo for Olympiacos in January 2009, having been paid $2.4 million of the $3.5 million he was owed.

Quote
Pargo's buyout with Dynamo Moscow was completed Monday after several days of negotiations, Pargo's agent, Mark Bartlestein, said.

Pargo signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with Dynamo Moscow and received about $2.4 million of his money, much of it up front. But the club has run into financial problems and could be on the verge of losing another former NBA player, Bostjan Nachbar.

Don't cry for Pargo.  He earned enough money playing basketball to be ordered to pay $14,580 per month in child support in his divorce.
