High school sports aren't for everyone but for those who play, most get a lot of good out of it, things that can last a lifetime.  That's the justification for a public school to subsidize sports and it's legitimate.

But, when a school gets as huge as Allen, there are tons of kids going through there each year who will never experience those things.  They're missing out but I guess most of the taxpayers don't mind.

Compare that to Frisco which seems to open a new high school every 2-3 years.  They made it a policy several years ago, knowing the growth they were having, to keep each high school a particular size.  I think they are up to nine high schools now.

There's a reason the Allen Band is 800+ members. Everyone gets to participate, not sit on the sideline with 11/5000 kids getting a chance.

Mtn Home and Siloam Springs care about travel.

It's fucking bullshit to play a conference game on the road Tuesday night in Marion or Parkview just to get home around 1:30-2:00am and back in class at 8:00 the next day.

Travel kills some of our programs. Some good talent just doesn't want to deal with it.

Plano's schools are huge.  They are ridiculous when you understand that they don't even include sophomores.

Plano ISD has six other "high schools" which are only for freshmen and sophomores.

The three high schools listed are for juniors and seniors only.  Plano is a city approaching 300,000 people in size.  DFW "suburbs" are just insane.

I remember when Frisco had 35,000 people.  Now it's approaching Little Rock in size, in just 15 years time.  It's nuts.

The 6A will be interesting with Texarkana moving to 5A and Sylvan Hills leaping way up the list to 6A.

Just a guess:

Jonesboro - East
West Memphis - East
Benton - West
Russellville - West
Lake Hamilton - West
El Dorado - West
Siloam Springs - West
Sylvan Hills - East
Marion - East
Sheridan - West
Pine Bluff - East
Mountain Home - East
Hall - West
Searcy - East
Jacksonville - East
Greenwood - West

What's going on with Texarkana?
How did Sylvan Hills increase so much?  (40% increase over two years)

I would imagine they got a lot of fall out from the Jacksonville succession from PCSSD.

Allen has basically bought years of championship banners on credit.  It's a great deal for those few at the top of that mountain of kids - sucks for everyone else who can't play high school sports because the lack of roster spots.  Sad thing is, all the kids who are starting for their one huge school would still be starting for a highly competitive team at the highest classification if they did split the school. A lot of kids get screwed so the grown ups can make up for their unsatisfying glory days. Everyone knows it and so everyone in the state hates those cheating fuckers, kind of like that Pulaski Academy.
Jealousy is a bitch.   :borat:  Way to totally confuse the issue of enormous schools like Allen with PA.
You mean the PA with 310 total students in this classification that beats schools with 6-7 times more students and hasn't lost to an Arkansas team in over 3 years?

6-7x more?

Ok.

Hey, let me have a wad of kids that have everything they could ever want from birth through 18 (nutrition, coaching, low stress, high level competition in various sports) and an unlimited amount of financial support and we will talk.

Split them into two divisions of eight teams and have promotion/relegation based on their on-field performance.

PA has about 300 kids.  Cabot who they beat in 2012 had 1900+ kids then.  HIghland Park, Tx who they beat in 2015 had 2000+ kids.  East High in Salt Lake (who they lost to last year) has 1900+ students.  That is 6-7 times the enrollment if my math is right.
It's still 300 kids against 1800+ some games and 1000+ in several games a year.
Agree about the advantages of PA.  Should they give up those things to make it more competitive?  Doesn't playing up 1 or 2 or 3 classes make up for some of that?  At least that is what it is supposed to do.

No doubt.  They are hated.  Unfairly in my opinion because I know a bunch of the kids.  They work really hard and are good kids.

Funny thing about those advantages as that they don't hold a candle to the advantages Highland Park has with 6-7 times the enrollment.  The average per capita income at HP has to beat least triple what PA's is.

Part of it is coaching and the system.  Plenty of private schools in the state struggle to be competitive despite many of those same theoretical advantages.

Per city-data.com Hylan Park's estimated average per capita income in 2015 was $125,954.

Median family income was $189,178.

That's a bunch. I have no idea if it is triple that of PA folks.

Last I checked each team could only put 11 on the field.

PA doesn't win because they have the best talent or the deepest bench (they clearly have neither) but they win b/c they train hard, are well coached and have a massive edge with their system.

(Can't believe I just defended PA)

That's amazing to me considering the average home price in HP is $1.65 mil.  That place is a whole other world.

The "average" may be $1.65MM (I didn't check) but I think the estimate median house is "only" a little over $1.00 MM.  If University Park is included in the calculations, then the numbers are likely skewed upward on the average by a relatively small number of mega mansions in HP.  So both numbers could be right.

It's been a while but I recall University Park had a lot of 50's/60's era four BR ranch relatively modest looking homes (with lots of Mercedes parked in the driveways).

Anyway way it is sliced, however, the HP kids have the same or better advantages the PA kids have and more bodies so PA going down there and beating them was a legit accomplishment so I give them credit where credit is due.

So PA doesn't cherry pick athletes from all around?

And their bench is pretty deep for a school with 300 kids -

Jerry Jones's grandson was the QB for HP last year, who won the State Championship. Have no idea how much their house cost, but I have to think it's WELL above 1.65 million.

Stephen Jones's house in Highland Park was listed last year for $11.5 million.
