Catholics v. Convicts
« on: November 08, 2017, 10:47:54 AM »
Part II.

Only this time, the Catholics are coached by an asshole, and the convicts are coached by a genuinely good guy (who gave us Ahmad Carroll).

Exact opposite of last time.

My bet is Miami.  And unlike 29 years ago, I'll be rooting for them.

Watched the 30 for 30 last night for the first time all the way through.  It was amazing.  Lotta things I didn't know, especially about the whole Holtz/Johnson situation.  It was really very interesting about the way Catholics v. Convicts came about.  Also, heard in there that the 1988 Hurricanes offense was the best ever.  Nope, not even close.  Check out this job by the Springdale guy.

2001 Hurricanes Offense

QB  Ken Dorsey   (NFL)
RB  Najeh Davenport (NFL)
RB  Willis McGahee  (NFL)
RB  Frank Gore  (NFL)
RB  Clinton Portis (NFL)
WR Andre Johnson  (NFL)
TE  Jeremy Shockey  (NFL)
TE  Kellen Winslow  (NFL)

That doesn't even mention 2 (T's) drafted in 1st round.

Or Philip Buchanan, William Joseph, Jerome McDougle, Ed Reed, Antrell Rolle, Mike Rumph, Sean Taylor, Johnathan Vilma, Vince Wolfork, and DJ Williams on defense.

There can't be any better roster ever assembled on the college level.  And I bet it wouldn't even be close.

Oh.  Now it's #3 ND vs. #7 MI.

Rooting for MI.  I like Richt.

Ya, their roster was sick.

I could never root for ND, ever, so I will root for Miami.

How did Richt give us Ahmad Carroll?

Are you saying you didn't pay attention to the Hogs in '00/'01?  Seriously?

I'll tell you, but I'd like to see if anyone else can remember (without googling) first.  BTW, that '01 class was top 10 with Carroll.

These 2 played last year so it's not the 1st meeting since those epics battles in the past. In 2016 it was Irish 30 Canes 27.

That was not a good team we barely beat at home.  We seriously may not win another game this season. - BASS January 20, 2018, 07:40:43 PM

Pretty sure that was Michael Grant, and it was because the university wouldn't let him in. So Richt recommended us.  I believe Batman was just a coup for us.

That’s what I thought too. Batman was down to us and Clemson. And Clemson pulled the batmobile trick first, then we copied it. That’s how creative Nutt was.

That class wasn’t top 10 either. We’ve never had a top 10 class. It did have four parade all-Americans though. Nutt was a much better recruiter than Bielema

Nutt could recruit on an individual level, but he may have been the worst coach in history in terms of planning his recruiting.  Our LBs suck this year?  Great, let's sign 12 of 'em this year.  Now our o-line sucks.  Let's sign 10 this season.  Oh shit, now we're out of receivers.  Sign 8 in this class.  Lather, rinse, repeat.  There was never any kind of recruiting plan beyond the current year.

I've never understood why coaches don't essentially sign a complete team in every class.

1 QB
2 RB
1 TE
2 WR
5 OL
4 DL
3 LB
2 CB
2 S

That leaves 3 spots every year for special teams or to replace transfers or other washouts.

Yep. It's okay though. I don't live/die by my internet rep.

I think it was 8 in the ESPN rankings back then.
MJ, Carroll, Richardson, Andrews, Peters, George Wilson, Richard Smith, Bua(?),

Nutt should have been fired for going 9-4 with that group in 2003. It was a NC talent team. With Cobbs and Talley at RB.

I guess he is saying if it was re-ranked. There is no way it was a top ten class, we have never had a top ten class. Carroll was a five star and Andrews was a four star. The other guys were all 2-3 stars. Plus Richard Smith and George Wilson weren't that good in college. They were average SEC guys at best and may not have started on many other teams. Same with Lawrence Richardson. he was good and serviceable, but far from a star.

I don't know what his rating was, but George Wilson was a walk-on. Doubt that pushed us in the top 10.
