Poor UALR (now featuring Darrell Walker’s golf game)
« on: February 05, 2018, 07:16:47 PM »
Some will remember the 2015-16 season where UALR went 30-5 under first-year coach Chris Beard and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  Beard left after that season for UNLV, and UALR hired Wes Flanigan to take over.

Last season they dropped to 15-17.  This year, they’re 5-19 thus far.  Today, they dismissed their leading scorer, former Malvern and McClellan player Andre Jones.

Things look to be in a mess there.

Flanagan recruited better at Parkview.

Really a shame, they haven't been this bad since Sidney tried his hand at coaching.  I remember the good times going to school there and watching Kestenbaum coached teams in a nearly empty Barton, and then the great Newell years, good times.

I forgot to mention that they lost by 30 to Georgia State this weekend.  That was their worst SBC loss in 20 years.

On a good note, their women are undefeated in conference play.

Hate to hear that about Jones. e's good enough to play at a power 5 school. Maybe they should get Foley to coach both.

It appears that hiring Wes Flanigan was not a good move. Who'd thunk it?

Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, alright. We got 4:11 Posi-trac out back, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some fuckin' muscle.

Watched him in the 4A title game a few years ago and the kid was amazing.

Conque went the right path in hiring Beard, then completely kicked it in hiring Flanagan.
Lazy hire, lazy results.

I’ve never experienced anyone working at CFA being a jerk or rude but yesterday I encountered a guy in the drive thru who was not only rude but a jerk. When I finally had my order and he didn’t even say my pleasure I yelled “thanks for being a jerk” and drove off.

It seemed to me like they overreacted to Beard leaving after one year.

Schools like that screw up when they try to hire someone they can keep, as opposed to the next rising star that will use them as a stepping stone to a better job.

Conque leaned on and grew his network, getting contacts from a lot of basketball-knowledgeable folks before he got in touch with Beard.
It was the right path to take in getting a coach at a school like UALR.

He did not do this after Beard left. I can only guess he thought Flanigan had been shown the way or something.

I took some shit on here when I said UALR should step up and keep that last coach here, whatever it cost. That there was enough talent in this state to support 2 teams, especially with an idiot in charge of the flagship team.

I don't think they should've necessarily done whatever it took to keep Beard, but they shouldn't have lazily handed that job to Flanigan.

not sure they could have kept Beard even with a bigger offer, didn't he want to get closer to his kids in Lubbock which is why he took UNLV then Tech?

I doubt Conque woulda stumbled onto Beard if Foley hadn't pointed him in that direction.

That was not a good team we barely beat at home.  We seriously may not win another game this season. - BASS January 20, 2018, 07:40:43 PM

Yeah he talked with quite a few folks, including Foley.
I'm not sure he talked with any of those folks when hiring Flanigan.
Strange.

Former UALR coach Porter Moser in on CBS right now, about to lead Loyola of Chicago to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 1985.
