Front load washer: what’s the best one out there?
« on: January 27, 2020, 01:50:01 PM »
I have a 21 year old Maytag front loader that has been a fucking rock.  The front bearing is going out and I’m just going to replace the entire unit.  Looking for suggestions from you assholes.

Lots of reviews out there, and I tried that when we bought the dishwasher when I did the remodel.  I will never do that again.  Bought the highly touted GE, and one week past the one year warranty, it shit the bed.  It hadn’t even been installed for 6 months.  They sent a repair man (independent contractor type)out to check, and he said he could fix it for about $400.  I said “fuck that, what brand of dishwasher do you NeVER work on?”  He said “Bosch.  I’ve been doing this for about 6 years, and never worked on a Bosch.”

So I bought a Bosch.  Best decision I could have made.  Took the GE out and smashed it with my tractor.

I don’t want to do the same thing with a washer...
So here I am.

Go.

Maytag is not what it was before Whirlpool bought them, quality is just not as good, but not terrible.

Other than that I can't help much.  Prior to getting divorced we had an old Maytag Neptune for 16 or 17 years.

I bought a Samsung set a year ago for my new house...no problems yet.

I've got a little change in my pocket going jing-a-ling-a-ling

We have LG combo that has been surprisingly solid for about 12 years.  I have had to reset it a couple times because the kids would push some magical combo of buttons to make the controls stop responding.

Seems really just luck of the draw on modern appliances regardless of brand. I have been putting off a new fridge because all the horror stories I read when shopping them.

Making appliances that last forever isn't as profitable as filling up landfills with made to toss units

No fucks were wasted in the preceding message.

I have a guy named Buddy in LR that fixes all my appliances. When I had to replace my dishwasher we went with a whirlpool from Metro. He specifically told me not to buy Bosch because they have more issues in fixing than some of the others. He said two others to avoid but can’t remember the names but metro was so easy and better priced than anyone.

I have a whirlpool front load washer and dryer and whirlpool frig and dishwasher...all brand new and no issues so far. My last house had the Bosch and it was a POS and never worked right.

Once in Yamsylvania, we had the potato famine. Which did not upset us because, hey, we eat only yams! Then we realized it is better to starve on potatoes than eat yams. We became so poor we had to raise monkeys for their fur. OK, we raised them for their pleasant smell and many tasty parasites. The kids today, tell them about parasite stew, and they look at you like you're some kind of nutty man, crazed from yam poisoning.

I know front loaders are the new hotness but our 15 year old Fisher-Paykel toploader with its direct drive motor has been solid as a rock.

my sister has had a lot of issues with mold with the front load dryers back in arkansas. Don’t really have that issue here so I got one.

I have two basic bitch kenmore washer and dryers in my condo that are over 14 years old. They just don’t make them like they used to. Before that I had a kenmore dishwasher that was 28 years old when it finally went out

I have had LG and GE front load combo and both were ok.  Had to replace the door hinge on the LG washer (which was easy) and the belt tensioner pulley on the LG dryer, which wasn’t as easy, but not bad.  This was over 10 years and a ton of really heavy loads of laundry and a ton of dog hair.  Like huge comforters daily.

Just got the GE’s for my parents since we are staying there and theirs was really old.  So far so good

I might splurge for something borderline industrial when we buy a home just because of the amount and weight of what we wash.

Get a top load Speed Queen, it's built like a friggin' tank.  We had a front load Whirlpool Duet that lasted about 5 years, and other than how dry it could spin towels I don't miss it at all.

This is one issue a lot of environmentalists show their true colors on. The push against long lasting appliances for ones that regularly go to landfills show they are either invested in the industry or are getting kickbacks for forcing regulations.

The last administration forced copper parts to be thinner. I had to have a copper part replaced three times on a brand new ac/furnace the first year.  Cost me $500 the first time. After that the company refused to charge me. That part wasn’t covered because they routinely break now.

Top loaders are a no-go.

Not because I don’t like them, but because of a built in issue.

I think read something about new speed queens not being as reliable due to some recent redesign.  Prior to that, you couldn't beat them.

Yeah, you specifically said front-loader.  No idea what's best but if you're in the LR area, I've always had good luck with Metro Appliance right off the Maumelle exit.

Went there, bought the Electrolux EFLS627UIW.

It is currently washing my clothes as I type.

I’ve bought all my appliances (except for that one shitty dishwasher) from Metro.
They beat HD by $200 on the same machine.

Agreed.  We replaced a completely good 15y/o Kenmore top loader when we moved 10 years ago because front loaders were the new hotness and my wife wanted one.  What a mistake.  They don't clean near as well as toploaders, and they don't last.  High speed vibration, moisture, and electronics don't go well together.  Had to repair the dryer once and when the washer quit working after 5 -6 years, I went with Speed Queen.  It doesn't have the capacity a front loader does, but I washes a load in about 30 minutes vs 60-90 for the front loader depending on which one of the 57 BS settings you use.  Talked to the local service tech who does warranty work for all the major brands, he said get Speed Queen, or a just buy a cheap Roper set for $500 and replace it every 5 years.  Fuck all that Eco front loader BS, you need water to get clothes clean.

Rev, I know you said top loader are out, but Speed Queen makes residential front loaders.  Also made in 'Merica.  I'm posting this in the "Products I believe in thread"

I read the same thing. One long term dealer called them out on line and they pulled  his franchise.

they can beat any of those places in town price wise and they don’t contract out their deliveries. I dealt with sears delivering the same dishwasher four times dented until I said refund me and called metro and they were out same day with delivery and cheaper.

That’s the titanium one, right?

They loaded one of those in my truck before I noticed the letters were different.  I didn’t care about the color, white matches the dryer, and it was $50 or $100 cheaper, so I got it.

So far, so good.  The previous machine was great, but this one is better.

If you’ve got a Metro in your area it’s the place to go.  They do unbelievavolume in their markets.

I tend towards Whirlpool in anything.  I like front loaders for a number of reasons, mainly it’s better for your clothes.  If you go top load never buy a new fangled one without an agitator; your clothes just float.

SpeedQueen is ok if you want a reliable tough washer.  It’s ancient tech that eats energy, chugs water, and is rough on clothes.  But it works.  Why do independent dealers love it? Cos they don’t sell HD or Lowe’s or sears or walMarks.  The margins they make on SQ is significantly more than they make on the major lines.  It’s totally a distribution play that focuses on independents with directed incentivized floors.

I don’t like French door reefers; they break constantly because the ice maker is in the fridge instead of the freezer.  New energy efficient compressors are not as heavy duty as old ones that just comes with the territory.
