Database Maintenance: Message Pruning
« on: March 13, 2021, 10:18:29 AM »
I'm going to be running something to get rid of the oldest posts around here. The main message table is really big and there's little benefit to it being that size. Unless you guys are frequently going back to really old posts for something....and I can't see that happening much.

Decreasing the number of messages means the search will work better, backups don't take forever, and mirroring the database is easier.

So that's going to be going on....but you guys shouldn't really notice much.

Can we forget that Morris, JLS, and Pelphrey ever coached here? Removing the above mentioned from our brain and database will make for a healthier board and hog fan

Actually, I need to run some queries first. I went to the last page of this forum and there are posts from 2006 so I need to have a plan.

Messages?  Or just old posts?   I have some old messages I’ve been holding for sentimental reasons, mostly from Al Bailey.

I can always download them, I guess.

Posts. Specifically topics that have had no posts in them for X days....and the posts in those topics.

Very old bloated game threads would be a good start, if the games themselves sucked and wasn't memorable.

I’m noticing a new post hog for posts ive already read the last post not sure what’s going on but thought I’d pass along

Once in Yamsylvania, we had the potato famine. Which did not upset us because, hey, we eat only yams! Then we realized it is better to starve on potatoes than eat yams. We became so poor we had to raise monkeys for their fur. OK, we raised them for their pleasant smell and many tasty parasites. The kids today, tell them about parasite stew, and they look at you like you're some kind of nutty man, crazed from yam poisoning.
