Shameless promotion of one of our own.  Shameless on my part.  Not shameless on Dr. Mongoose's part...but he's pretty shameless too.   Check out his and Bobby Swofford's new podcast called The Hospitality Room....

The DE transferring from LSU was a solid 4 star kid with 2-3 years of eligibility.  There's a 5-star LB  from DFW with 2-3 years left leaving Bama we may land.

It's hard to pass those up for a kid with mostly mid major offers and some potential upside.

I do think this staff does a great job of rewarding walk ons like Clark and Morgan.   HS coaches should be able to see that, if the talent's there the kid will get a scholie.
This situation has happened in the past when the level of recruiting elevates. It happened with JFB, with Holtz, Hatfield.  Some coaches get a bit bent when their star player just isn’t good enough now.

The portal changes everything.  A high schooler vs a junior with good tape, who’s been in a college weight room.  No brainer.  It’s going to get where schools may only take only the top recruits to spend the other schollies on portals.

It won’t be quite that bad.  There will be more available schollies to give since there will also be players lost in the portal.  You might still have the same or close to the same number of slots to give to high school guys.

It will come out like a turd in the churn. You might just see some smaller schools grabbing up a lot of the high school kids. JUCO kids are nowhere to be found. So anyway they go somewhere for 2-3 years...if they are worth a fuck they use their one-time transfer or whatever it is this week and get that P5 offer the the sweet NIL contract.

I saw today where Jordan Jones is in the portal again and will try to play an impressive 7th season of college football. You would think the guy would just want to move on with the wife and kids at this point.

Heck, if Michael Dyer can play well into his 30s I guess Jones can too.

Honestly, before NIL and portaling JUCO had already lost the status it used to have.   When's time we had a JUCO guy come in and contribute?

2013-2014.  It really has.

I guess you don't need jucos now, you can transfer up to elite schools from lower divisions or mid majors.

I mean, just this year with Myron Cunningham.  Not the best example, but he was a starter this season and last.

Thanks, forgot he was a juco.  Absolutely a good example.

I remember being able to just go out and go to Kansas and pick up two solid starters like Petty and Crim in a class, it used to be easier.  I feel like the portal is definitely changing this.

I’ve said this before, but the portal will significantly erode G5 football now that JUCO is virtually dead.

G5 programs will see their best start portaling to P5 schools regularly, and you’ll especially see it with the all conference and OPoY/DPoY players from that level.

Like someone above said, if you’re a coach would you rather roll the dice with a high school kid or a sophomore/junior with tape and time in a college weight room.

It’s also why I’m not printing the 2022 SEC Championship shirts for A&M just yet. Yes they got a hell of a recruiting haul, but those are still high school kids, most of whom need seasoning, acclimation and time in the weight room. Yet people are acting like they just landed Will Anderson Jr, Nakobe Dean, and Bryce Young in the portal.

There are still going to be good kids coming out of JUCO (flunky kids didn't just amazingly get smarter) and because of the new portal/transfer rules I think paying some attention to JUCO may not be such a terrible thing in some cases. A feller could maybe get some under the radar guys. I get taking a P5 or even a G5 transfer over a JUCO kid that hasn't pissed a drop in major college football but that certainly doesn't mean there aren't some good kids coming from those ranks or capable of it. I find it somewhat puzzling how college football has just forgotten about JUCO all the sudden.

I know one thing this whole thing has certainly killed the entire 25 rule or whatever it was. Now that lots of programs are having to take in 40 or more players every year moving forward.

the 25 is still in effect. teams can make up to 7 guys that portal out, but it's only for the 2022 season, at least for now.  the rule was put in so teams wouldn't get killed roster wise because of players leaving.

covid years are available thru 2024 but super seniors count against the 85. unless things are changed/extended, filling out the 2023 roster is going to be a mess for most teams.

As cater so eloquently put it recently, they just need faster Wifi.   Then you’d see those GPAs come ALIVE.

Of course you got to look for players everywhere but JUCO talent is there for two reasons:  dumber than dirt, or discipline issues.  The portal reduces the need to take these risks.

I mean I get the offer, but they have to know that would be a serious downgrade professionally. One or two more years with an ever improving KJ and he would be in line for some decent HC offers. Especially if he can work the same kind of magic with Hornsby.

Unfortunately, I am not sure the press would agree that it would be a step down for Briles.  They love Miami... for some odd reason.

Now there are tweets out there saying UA is "working on" an extension for Briles.

Is Sexton his agent?  This whole thing has the smell of him...

Yes, out entire staff is represented by Sexton.  Briles is probably going to get somewhere around $1.5 to $1.8 a year when it is all said and done.
