The Freddie Freeman era in Atlanta is over.

America's Team traded Cristian Pache, Shea Langeliers, and a couple of minor league pitchers to the Oakland A's for first baseman Matt Olson.

Not sure they did anything wrong here. 

We don't want 39 year old Freddie doing his best late stage Pujols impression taking up $35MM worth of payroll at the end of a deal.

Olson is a worthy replacement.  Hopefully the difference in salaries will enable the team to add another SP and OF.

Freddie is a different kind of player than Pujols was. Freddie is currently in his prime and Pujols was already starting to decline when he left St. Louis. If Freddie got a 6 year deal, he would be 38 at the end. It's ludicrous to be ok with giving him a 5 year deal, but not a 6th for the face of your franchise, and clubhouse leader. It's definitely Liberty Media being cheap. They have done nothing but hamstring the team since they become owners of the team. I don't see them spending what we need them to in free agency.

I like Olson also, but not at the expense of losing Freddie and also 4 of our top 15 prospects.

They just gave Olson 8 years/$168MM.  That’s a pretty team friendly deal, but I wouldn’t call it cheap. 

It seems to me like one of two things happened. 

1. Freddie has better deals (6-7 years) and the Braves wouldn’t go that far.

2. Freddie’s agent convinced him to play chicken with the Braves thinking they would cave in on the extra years.

Yes, I'm glad they went ahead and did the extension for Olson. I'm starting to come around on it, so I guess we'll see if the team gets better.

Had they given him 6/180 inclusive of 2021 I'd have been fine with it.  I doubt Freddie would've signed that, as it was effectively a five year deal from the expiration of his current (at the time) deal. 

If there is a difference between Freeman and Olson right now it is miniscule.  Given the age difference the gap, if there is one, should narrow and eventually turn in favor of Olson over the life of the contract.

Odd as it sounds, I think the Freeman/Olson deal worked out for quite literally everyone invovled, save for the A's.

Freeman goes back home and gets the money he was after. The Dodgers get a great 1B and solid piece for their lineup and don't have the risk of it being a Pujols-esque albatross contract on the backend. The Braves get a great replacement for Freeman who is younger and for less money overall.

That's a hard one. Part of me says of course you leave the guy in (especially when he's only at 80 pitches), but if you blow a guys arm in mid-April chasing it, you're fucked for the season. Totally their call and I'm sure that, while it sucked not to have a chance at history, Kershaw gets it.
