Title: Perpetual NBA Discussion Thread
Post by: Animal on October 09, 2019, 03:29:05 PM
So I don't know why we care that China hates NBA. Personally depite the billion(s) of dollars of revenue the NBA may get from China...tell them to suck your nuts.

Going to turn this one into the permanent NBA thread.

I'll start with the fact that it appears that Isaiah Joe may need to call HRW for some advice on how to handle the Asian women.

NBA season starts tonight with 76 former SEC players on NBA rosters.

Former SEC Players on 2021-22 NBA Rosters (https://www.secsports.com/article/32431833/former-sec-players-2021-22-nba-rosters)

Kentucky leads the way with, by my count, 26 former players in the league this season.

Five former Hogs start the season in the Association:  Bobby Portis (Bucks), Daniel Gafford (Wizards), Isaiah Joe (76ers), Patrick Beverly (Timberwolves), and Moses Moody (Warriors).

The link below has a complete list of former Hogs playing professionally (both NBA and other leagues) and their current teams.

Or Justin Smith?

Don't know on either of them.

Michael Qualls is lighting up Romania.  More impressive is Jaylen Barford, who's off to a good start in a league that is primarily made up of Russian teams.  It's a pretty good overseas league.

Interesting.  I just had to look him up.  Never heard of him.  Apparently he's from Cedar ridge high school.  Never heard of it.  It's in Newark arkansas.  Never heard of it. He chose Wichita state over offers from Arkansas state and south dakota state.  I've heard of those places.  Ended up transferring to OU.

I wonder if he had gone to a bigger high school if he would be more known?

Dare not defile the 2013 Class 2A state champions!

Edit:  Cedar Ridge actually has several state championships in recent years in both Class 2A and 3A.  They won a couple back-to-back while Reaves was there.

I think Wichita State was probably the biggest school, by far, to offer him out of high school.

Of course, things went south there in the program after he got there, so he bailed for OU.

He averaged about 6 ppg at WSU in two seasons, then exploded at OU for around 16 ppg in his two years there.

Good for him.  I like his story.  I read a good Q&A on him on NBA.com.  Hope he makes it in the bigs.

I follow him on Twitter.  People up there absolutely LOVE him and it's easy to see why.  I love that he always shows his Razorback and hometown pride as well.

I think we've had a lot of players close to him from an innate talent level, but very few that love basketball and play with the fire he has.  Everyone else wants to go to LA or NY to party, he wanted to go to Milwaukee (and stay) to win and to be appreciated.

He did go to New York and got paid $15 million for one season with the Knicks, which is still rather mind-boggling when you consider he's only making about $4.3 million this season with the Bucks.

He hated it there.  Giannis recruited him to the Bucks, and he says he took less money (a lot less) because he wanted to win.

He could've signed for a mint as a free agent this year and gave the Bucks an enormous hometown discount.  I hope he takes advantage of local endorsement opportunities, etc.

After the incident in Chicago I think he prefers a certain environment, teammates that can deal with how fiery he is and even use that to their advantage.  He has some pretty cool and collected and focused teammates there and I think that helps.  He also hates losing.  He made the biggest deal about being stuck at home and outside of the bubble in Orlando and he wanted to be playing, he hated it.

I will say that that was a lot of damage from a short, semi-closed, backhand punch. Would have been nice to see what he could have done in mma if he started early and had the mentality for it.

Nobody mentioned Steph Curry breaking the 3 point record with a lot of career left for him...

Some appropriate discussion about whether Lebron has been a bit overhyped and Stef being underhyped relative to what they've accomplished.

I'll say this, Stef wanted to go to Va Tech where his dad went and didn't get a scholarship offer and ended up at Davidson.  He lit it up his career there and took them to the Elite 8 and gets picked #7 overall.

Golden State has largely been shit forever and he went there, built a championship team, stayed there and keeps trying to put together another.

He changed the game.  The NBA's focus on 3 point shooting was built around him as its golden child.

That's a hell of a career.  Hats off to him.  His 3 point record will likely be unbreakable when he's done if he doesn't retire early.

RE: Curry

He without a doubt changed both college and pro ball in how teams view positions on the court and what defines a good shot etc etc. The analytics of the sport changed in ways that many staffs are still struggling to understand. I would be curious if the average scores in the NBA have went up over Curry's career?

To me the average scores in college have went down for some reason...possibly over reaching officiating combined with terrible shot selection and shitty emulated pro offenses.

In any case I can't think of another player maybe anywhere in sports that had that kind of impact on their sport. At least nobody else in my lifetime comes to mind. Tom Brady is a great great QB...he's changed the game by having specially made Tom Brady rules. So in the respect he's "changed the game".  In fairness that's not because of Brady being a whiner...just a circumstance of the times. Lots of money on the line and nobody wants to see stars hurt and their careers cut short because the Ronnie Lott's of the world were coming in and killing dudes.

Lebron may have contributed to the discussion in terms of "position-less" basketball, but not nearly as much impact as Steph has had on the league and that was already coming anyway. When Lebron is gone nobody will really even give a shit and that's not just to shit on Lebron it's just a fact. He's won rings by teaming up with superstars which was popularized by KG and Paul Pierce. So it's not like he even invented that when he went to Miami. Arguably had Lebron never left Cleveland to begin with...the dude might only have 1 ring if that.

Pickup…normally older dudes MWF at 11:30. Evenings and Sunday afternoons  are busy with shitbird younger dudes going 110%

There is quite a bit of older talent at the LRAC. Some if it’s 40-50+, but players look the part for about 4 trips down the court

Joe Johnson Smashing an NBA Record by 1,802 Days Isn’t His Most Impressive Feat
By Evin Demirel -December 23, 2021

More than nine years ago, Arkansas basketball legend Joe Johnson walked onto Boston Celtics’ homecourt as a Brooklyn Net and turned what had been an NBA game into an NHL match for Celtics legend Paul Pierce. On a particularly devastating dribble move, he put Pierce on skates and cast him aside like a master illusionist playing with a doubting child.

Pierce found himself on his hands and knees while Johnson rose, untouched, to cooly swish an 18-foot jumper. At the time, I wrote Johnson’s signature move would make a nice centerpiece as part of a highlights reel for his induction into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. But Johnson has since then made a strong case for induction into something much more prestigious (more on that below).

On Wednesday night, after nearly three years out of the NBA, the 40-year-old Johnson made one of the most unusual returns the league has ever seen. Signed to a 10-day contract with the undermanned Boston Celtics, the same team that drafted him out of Arkansas in 2001, Johnson appeared on the court to thunderous applause in the final minutes of the Celtics’ blowout win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He promptly nailed an elbow jumper, which gave him 20,407 points – the most any Razorback has ever scored in the NBA (by more than 8,000 over Sidney Moncrief). “He joked in the locker room, ‘if I get them on that hip, it’s done, they’re dead,'” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said afterward. “So, we know what he is, everybody said it as they walked in, ‘Joe is a bucket.’ That’s what he is and he’s always been, and so, that’s not going to change. Happy for him.”

What is fun about this team is you have a superstar, a few all star types then some role players. They play really well together and have fun playing which isn’t typical in the NBA.  The game against the Clippers this weekend they lost Dillon, didn’t have most if not all of their starting frontcourt and didn’t have their HC. They got down double digits and ended up winning going away. Fun team to watch.

And yes, Ja is a freak. The alley oop last night was almost as good as the block. Dude is gonna sever his head on a rim or backboard.

Moody with a big game for the Warriors last night. 20pts (including 6 threes) and 7 boards. They beat the Spurs without Curry, Thompson, Green, and Wiggins.

Curry seems to love him.  I'm glad he ended up there, that's a team with a positive culture.

Mason's up with the Lakers as well.

Against Baylor in the Elite 8 he gave us 11 points on 2/10 shooting and 0/4 from three with 5 rebounds and 1 assist.  Glad that wasn't the best he had.

He's a borderline player, it's hard for him to make a team.

Like Kapernick he has taken to activism and that obviously takes a large amount of time that a marginal guy like him needs to be using to improve his game.

Do I respect him and 100% agree with his message?  Abso-damn-lutely.  The Chinese trolls that are constantly harassing him on Twitter are an amusing diversion.

I would highly recommend.  TV really doesn't do him justice vs watching him in person especially from the lower bowl of the Forum.  One of the more incredible stats I've seen on him is he is something like 3rd in the league in PPG in the paint, at 6'3".  You are almost guaranteed to see a SC Top 10 play (or multiple) each game.

The Grizzlies in general are very fun to watch and seem more like a college team with their comradery and how they pull for each other.  Very refreshing.

The NBA quietly changed the wording of the rule a few years ago to accommodate LeBron and James Harden who simply decided they needed 3 steps before shooting (also to allow for the strange look of the Euro-step and the abominable "step back").

They invented a definition for the "gather step" (step one after terminating the dribble) and then the traditional two steps after the gather.

NBA refs will swear to you that nothing has really changed and players only get two steps - the very definition of memory-holing.

The Lakers coach is the one getting scapegoated and already talk of hiring Doc Rivers. I don't see Doc leaving a good roster in Philly to take on a roster of old guys with the Lakers. Same article said Quinn Synder is also on the wish list.

Maybe just maybe Lebron should leave the general management up to the GM because he sucks at putting teams together. What is it about super star's lacking the ability to put a team together? Jordan couldn't do it either. Here's a tip Lebron in case you are slumming on woopig. Find some tough as nails guys. Anthony Davis breaks a nail and he's down for half the season.

This seems really outdated, even though it says it's updated today.

No Jaylin at all?  Not buying that.

Oscar has nothing to gain by coming back, he can't improve his height.

He needs a better mid range shot.  He was owning us so much in the paint I was thrilled when he took an open short jumper, he couldn't hit shit.

not sure - I think Vegas has a point - not sure how Oscar's game (and Jaylin"s too) translates to the NBA style.
We're talking about the best players in the world are in the league and you gotta be better than an experienced player with serious skill to make a roster.

The NBA is a different game than the game in college and your skill set has to elite and you need to be in the right system to utilize those skills.
Title: Re: Perpetual NBA Discussion Thread
Post by: Animal on April 07, 2022, 01:43:27 PM
There are a lot of NBA bigs that aren't giants but in terms of drafting a player if Oscar is 6-9 he's probably going 2nd round. They'll put a premium on longer athletes that can shoot it.

Notae I don't think is a super great nba prospect...he's an older guy that's still developing a floor game and is fairly inconsistent with shot selection and overall decision making. Would need to play and defend the point guard spot. A couple years in the G could maybe do him some good...I think his age dings him as a long term project.

Jaylin has a lot of tools of a really decent NBA big man. Developing as a shooter, good passer, high basketball IQ...seems to be a great teammate. He's just one of those guys NBA GMs are going to want in their program. Absolutely isn't a finished product...needs to improve on low post skills both offensively and defensively. Probably needs more work getting those pick and pops at 15ft and the shoulder fade away Kobe shots. He's a high 2nd round grade but I wouldn't be surprised if he goes thru the draft he ends up getting picked late 1st. NBA teams tend to still draft international players when they really don't necessarily want an NBA player right now.

My point is I don't see how coming back helps him become an NBA guy.  He just doesn't fit that mold.  I don't see another year with Cal changing that.

The best reason to come back is if you can improve your stock somehow.  I don't think he can.

I think Jaylin is a 2nd rounder, he's a good defender with a solid skill set but can't create in the post.  His ticket to the 1st round is to be able to shoot 3s consistently, and I can see that happening.  He's not terrible as is.

yeah, i think williams is going to grade out better than a lot of folks (fans) are expecting. outside of the 'sure fire' lottery picks, the nba drafts on potential and he definitely has it.

plus the g-league doesn't have the loser stigma that it used to. they've been funded and staffed better so teams have no problem sending mid to late 1st rounders there to get them developed into their system.

The G league is very competitive, and I'm sure players not wanting to play overseas as much with COVID an issue is helping.

However, if you know you have a shot at 1st round or especially lottery pick money, that is something to consider.

FedEx Forum in the playoffs and Bud Walton Arena when the hogs are good and are playing a highly-ranked rival are very much alike...so loud.

Last night, even though I don't gamble, felt like I had money on the game between LA Clippers and T-Wolves.

P Bev Is a national treasure.

We need him at the Olympics.  He is the kind of guy that would be mugging a Ugandan dude on the opposite end, all the way down the court, talking shit while up 60 with 3 minutes to play.  Zero chill in that dude and I love it.

Watching the Jazz -Mavs game and the Jazz were called for defensive 3 seconds. I’ll admit I don’t watch much NBA, but what is that? The Mavs got a FT, then the Jazz got the ball. I’m assuming that now neither team can have a player in the paint for more than 3 seconds?

No. He didn’t have a qualifying test score. Wichita State offered before he got the qualifying test score, and he signed with them pretty soon after he had a good enough test score. A lot of big basketball schools showed interest after he scored 73 in a game, but the test score kept him from getting offered.

In addition he was only averaging 8 PPG as a Soph at Wichita when he transferred to OU.

Ja Morant just drives into the lane, slips, slides, walks, or pushes off and gets fouls called. He's basically James Harden with better hair and a few more moves.

Just now: Grizz shoot a few shots...a guy down in the paint was literally riding on the shoulders of a Wolf and tipped the ball out and the Grizz gets a 3 to take the lead. Excellent officiating.

Sounds a bit odd saying this but, does Curry get enough credit? Like it or not he's completely changed how the game is played. Like Bird, I think his lack of athleticism causes him to be undervalued compared to the greats.

He'd be my all time NBA 3rd team pg behind magic and Isaiah

Absolutely agree with this.

Also, like Mike, he has built and rebuilt a team around him and stayed in one place.  History will remember him as the greatest 3 point shooter ever, and I think down the road people may see him as equal or greater than Lebron because of it.

I don’t usually watch a lot of NBA, but the finals are usually pretty good.  They were just talking about a lack of offense for the Warriors if Curry went out, and mentioned a couple of players that might be put in.  What about Moody?

Warriors up on the Celtics by 17 late in the 3rd quarter Game 6.

They've blown leads already in this series though...

Grant Williams gets barely grazed...several nano seconds later he jerks his head back in the opposite direction in which he was he "hit"...sold it though.

Mad respect to Curry for winning these titles and staying put in the Bay Area and doing it with a variety of players.  He's probably not done yet.

They have a great makeup on that team and it's only going to get better when Kaminga and Moody come up to a point of being solid every night rotation players. Poole rounded into a starter this season...Gary Payton 2 is becoming a great defender like his daddy. Iggy is probably going to become a player-coach or just a coach if I had to guess. Wiggins had a breakout season and really helped get them over the hump. I know they really like Moody so it wouldn't surprise me if they elevated him into their plans sooner rather than later.

If he gets drafted, I don't think he's going to be too disappointed. There are only so many amateur players picked by NBA teams in the draft. It ain't an easy thing to do. Doesn't matter where you're drafted as long as you work hard at getting better. A little bit different scenario, but everyone remembers the year that Jordan was drafted...in the number 2 spot. Behind Sam Bowie.

The way I understood it...Umude signed a 2 way deal already but that might not mean much this time of the year. I get the feeling nobody knows what to do with Notae...he isn't a lead guard and will get eaten up by 2 guards in the NBA. He needs a lot of work. The comparison was Nick Van Exel but Nick was far further along as a ball handler.
Title: Re: Perpetual NBA Discussion Thread

If Umude can continue to improve his defense he will find a spot in the league. His ceiling could be a PJ Tucker type role.

Agree on Notae. His an elite defender and has a god given ability to score. He has to improve his 3 pt % and his handle. Kid seems to have the work ethic. He'll make good money playing ball somewhere.

Happy for Jaylin, was worried he wouldn't get a solid deal when he left early.  He got good advice.

I didn't realize Chet Holmgren starred in one of my favourite 80"s movies Student Bodies.

He donned coke bottle glasses and a floppy hat for the role.

He really doesn't look that old though.

Henceforth I will refer to him as Malvert

I saw that on a show similar to Elvira's on the USA network, but the host was a guy dressed up as a super hero, smoking a cigar. Kinda of reminded me of Cliff Clavin.

Saw that Trey Wade is doing the Team Arkansas thing in TBT. Does that mean he got dropped from the Cardinals fall camp already? Camp starts the 2nd and the tournament is scheduled to run through the 3rd.

*edit* nvm, I was looking at the dates for last year's tournament. This one looks like it wraps much earlier so I guess he could squeeze both in as long as his contract with the Cards allows for it.

*edit to the previous edit* Well shit, it looks like the championship game runs on the 2nd this year. Might be one of those situations where he commits to play and then drops out at some point. I think I remember that being pretty common for this tournament.

Arkansas TBT traditionally shits the bed so I don't think it's a problem anyone could possibly consider being realistic. That he's playing basketball that close to NFL camp tells me he's not going to a NFL camp. TBT could be a launching pad to getting picked up by an overseas league.

Lewis Black curmudgeon rant coming.

Why is the NBA Summer League suddenly a thing almost as big as the real thing? Why am I getting basketball news and highlights on every sports show and site for games that don't even count? Who the fuck cares? Is it just that baseball and golf are that boring? This didn't use to be a thing.

To be fair, I don't even watch the real NBA, so I guess I am not the target audience. But why is this suddenly a thing?

I kind of had the same thought. I didn't know if the algorithms were targeting me with it because of all the former razorbacks in the pros now (or at least on the verge). And yes, golf is boring as fuck.

Because MLB sucks even more. No one watches baseball anymore so they're trying to pull in viewership from basketball fans. I've been watching the summer league for several years. The one they used to have in Orlando was awesome. No fans, only coaches and NBA execs. It was like a tryout  Those kids were battling for a spot and it showed.

I'll add it used to only be on NBATV. ESPN most likely is desperate for viewership so they jumped on board.

Speaking of algorithms, for the past week or two, my Facebook reels and insta have been filled with short guys dunking and showing off their vertical. Streetball type stuff. Not actual basketball games, just look at this dunk!! I guess I clicked on something to start it all, but it's like 50% of my random shit now. Hopefully it will fade.

Ben Shapiro has been flooding mine. No idea why, as I find him to be a slimy, insufferable taint tumor.

It's been popular for at least 5 years and probably longer. Overall the NBA is a league that goes about 10 months out of the year and has created a watchable product for much of that time.

well said. I've actually watched a few games as it's more compelling than the NBA regular season. kids battling for spots and experience after sitting on the bench all season.

also, what else is on?
MLB is just doesn't do it for me anymore.

lol I just flipped by ESPN long enough to see JWill take a charge exactly the same way he did in college. Planted outside the arc, hands protecting his nuts, the offensive player takes a few steps and runs right into him.

It was called a block.

For those interested, the Bobby Portis Foundation will hold a charity game at UALR’s Jack Stephens Center on July 30.  Portis will be there, along with “10+” unnamed current and former NBA players.

Russell, for those who don't know, was compared to Wilt Chamberlain during their careers, and for all time afterwards.  The general tilt goes "Wilt was the greatest offensive player, Russell the greatest defensive player."  The argument went from there.

There are modern statistical methods to rate players today, far beyond the rebound, steal, and blocked shot stats used in yesteryear (bs and steals were not even calculated during Wilt and Russell's time).  It is not nearly as subjective as it was in the early NBA.

Russell is so far ahead of everyone else in defensive win shares is is not even close.  DWS has been shown to be a MUCH more important stat in relation to winning than any other.  Point?  At the things that mean winning games, Bill Russell was the GOAT.

Russell was on 2 straight HS State Championships, 2 straight NCAA  Championships, the Olympic title, won the NBA title in his first and last years and 9 in between.  His supporting cast came and went, he was the icon of those Celtic teams.  When he didn't play, those "great" Celtic supporting casts had a terrible winning %.  He was the first Black NBA head coach, and the first player/coach in the NBA to win a championship.

edit, added from the CBS Sports tribute: ...above everything else Russell was on the court, he was the sport's greatest winner. He lost only two playoff series in his entire career. He never once lost a winner-take-all game. Not in college. Not in the Olympics. Not in the NBA. He won all 21 of such games he played...end edit.

Wilt was a great athlete in other sports, of course.  Just ask him.  Bill fucking Russell made the US Olympic team in the fucking high jump.  He gave his spot to the third place finisher because he was already going on the basketball squad.  He claims he could jump high enough to look DOWN into the rim.

Anyway.  It was a subjective argument 30 years ago, Wilt vs Russell.  Not so much anymore.
