The stage is set for the time trial.

Leipheimer is in the lead with about a 30 second lead on closest rivals Michael Rogers and DaveZ.  Dave is at +28 with Rogers at +24.  Chris Horner, another American from Astana, is 34 seconds back.

Lance is in 4th at 30 seconds back.  I don't expect he's at peak form, so I don't think he can take back that much time.  He's probably going to just ride hard to give Levi good splits.  Him and Horner have both said they're going all out for the ITT, but neither of them expects Levi to lose the race.  It'll be kind of surprising if there is any change in the top four given the fact that all those guys are great ITTers.

Armstrong has been giving strong, long pulls at the front to pull back breakaway groups to maintain Levi's lead, which is pretty bad ass when you think about it.

Lance's bike has been recovered for the Time Trial.  He'll be riding it.  He had a substitute made with the line added on the frame:  ride it like you stole it.

Lance starts third to last two minutes ahead of Dave.  Pro rules dictate that riders from the same team can't go in tandem so as to avoid collusion.

Armstrong is supposed to start at 3:53 with Levi starting four minutes later.

Levi crushed the ITT.  He beat Dave Z by eight seconds.

Lance came in at 14th, which is pretty incredible considering this was the first time trial he's had since the 2005 tour of france.

LeviStrong.  Leipheimer wins.

Zabriskie third, Micky Rogers 3rd.

Lance finished seventh.  First top ten finish of the year.

Contador is just as arrogant if not more IMO.  Lance has at least said he'll ride for the Kid.  Meanwhile, Contador wanted to ride with Lance this week to "test the loyalty of the team."

Lance will not be riding the Giro, at least not to win it.  From what I understand, he had a clean break.  Regardless, it sounds like he is trying to peak for the first week of the tour anyway, which would put him in the Yellow if he's true to past form.

Besides, Conti will have many years to come to win the Tour again.  And while at the very least Contador is a favorite to win in July, there is going to be lots of stiff competition this year, unlike when he won it or last year.

The only thing that worries me about Lance is the fact that he gets out of the pedals a lot and is the premier time trialist of his hera (in the Tour at least).

Both of those put enormous stress on the clavicle, but a dude that rides with Levi whose had five broken collarbones says that Lance should be fine for July.

Word just came through that there is no longer any issue with Lance's supposed violation of testing protocols.

The Tour is still on for him

The Giro starts on Saturday.

Look for Lance and Astana to ride hard for Levi.  The long time trial down the coast will suit Levi well.  It's technical, rolling hills, and long stretches requiring power.  It's a perfect fit for an ITT master like Levistrong.

Garmin is gunning for the TTT on the opening day again.  I hope they get it.  They're really built to win it.  I'd really like to see an American team capture the maglia rosa again.  Levis is my pick to win it.  Basso should be in top form as well.  Lance won't be in the running for the overrall, but he oughtta be pretty tough come the third week.  Interestingly enough, Basso hasn't ruled out Lance.  He said that Lance's presence in any race "scares everyone."  Kinda crazy given a guy who has been gone for three years.

Anyway, it should be a great three weeks of cycling.

I hope that both VdV and Lance find good form towards the end.  I'm still hoping for an American majority podium in Paris   :notexas:

worth mentioning... that pro bike race that Floyd Landis was riding in... they had the finish line right next to Baum Stadium... saw them finish as the Goblin 5A state game was going on... that finish was intense!  40 or so bikes all together smoking through the finish line.

i forgot about it until hacker mentioned it.  i've been following teh giro anyway.

according to Chris Horner, when he was doing the first pull for Astana in the TTT, he had them going at 58 kph.  When Lance took the next pull, they were going 65 kph.  Lance also led across the finish.

Astana, Garmin, and Columbia looked like pros in it.  The other teams looked lost.

On the second stage, Levi lost 13 seconds after getting caught up in a bunch of crashes.  It's not that big of a deal, but you never know how that might factor in later down the line.

thank for the update.
I haven't had a chance to watch it, but Tom Danielson's facebook status said Farrar was stuck with one gear at the end and apparently Vande Velde crashed out?

yep.  two broken ribs and bruises on lower back and pelvis.

the ribs will make it tough for him to start the Tour I think.  not to mention how much that will frick up his training.

aMm like that is why Armstrong declined to ride the Giro in the past.

A lot of people are commenting on Armstrong's kit.  He's sporting world champion colors for the first time in a long time (it was a long time ago that he won the world's.)
