reset the router by pulling the power cable pull out for 60 sec and then plugging it back in

Can you access the controls of the router? Have you changed any settings on it or your computer lately? Have you right clicked on your network icon and selected "repair"?

Thanks for all the replies.  I have the router up and running, except for the fact that my xbox 360 is showing a NAT setting as Strict and I cannot get the router to change this setting.

You either need to set your router to turn on uPnP or go in and open up all the Xbox ports manually.

I have the same issue with my Netgear router/modem on my HP Pavilion desktop.  I've unplugged, run diagnostics and still no connection.  I'm getting the message "Network did not assign an IP address to this computer".

My wireless connection on the laptop works fine.  I've been having trouble with viruses so I've downloaded some software a while back.  The last thing I did before it went on the fritz was a defrag and disc clean.  Haven't been able to get online since.

I'm I going to have to take this to the shop?  I'm not a techie.

What software did you download?  Sounds like you're getting douched by a strict firewall.

When you get the message the you are being assigned an IP, it means your DHCP isnt work (the system that automatically assigns IP addresses inside of your network).  If your DSL router and wirless router both have DHCP turned on and its hooked up the wrong way, it can cause conflicts.

Well, I was/am battling a virus and I went a little overboard I think.  I have McAfee loaded, then added AVG, Ad-aware and Spy-Bot.  It slowed my system down, but I could still get on line until I performed the defrag and disc clean.  I tried re-setting to earlier configs and booting in safe mode to no avail.

Wipe your system clean and stop falling for advertisements.  Stop clicking on ad-ware links. 

Where do you live?  I'm happy to recommend a good technical person to keep your system clean if I know one in your area.
