Who burned it down to the ground the quickest?
« on: December 01, 2011, 02:13:04 PM »
I think the actual answer here may be Joe Paterno and Jerry Sandusky because I'm not sure Penn State will even HAVE a football program 5 years from now after the lawsuits, but that was a slow decay decades in the making.

I'm talking about taking something that was respected and having one staff come in and torch it down to the ground so badly within the span of 2 years.

I hesitate to put Nutt in here because LOL Miss wasn't all that respected to begin with, but I know he does set the standard for a lot of folks.

It's a tie between Joshy and Favre, as far as I am concerned.

It has to be TN. I find it hilarious because I hate Fat Phil but he did win games but that wasn't enough for the Vol idiots so they ran him off. Enjoy it Vols (apologies to mr. zorback).

Had to go with Nutt.  BUT it wasn't an easy choice with TN on the list.  Nutt won out mostly due to "tradition".  Since he torched one program and the idiots at Ole Piss still let him come in and torch theirs.  He also did it far more spectacularly than than the TN brass.  However, TN was actually a respectable program with a solid history.  Tough call... But Hootie gets the nod here for his style points.

Got to be tn. I can't remember a program that huge, with so many advantages (huge school, loyal fan base-they had more fans at our game with them than anyone else this year, good recruitng area, rich tradition) falling so fast.  This year, they just looked like utter dogaMm, and they're not going to be back anytime soon.

Fulmer was 5-7 his last season, so the decimation began before Kiffin and 2009.

I guess it's all relative to how good a program was when it started its tumble.

I know that (unlike UGa), they had to play a killer schedule this year (Bama, LSU, USC, UGa, FSU) but it is remarkable how fast Florida has become sorta average.  8-5 last year.  6-6 this year with their most impressive win probably being a 5 point win over Vandy.  If they don't beat that next year, they're probably talking about changing coaches again.  That shouldn't be happening.

It remains to be seen what will happen after this, but Mack Brown deserves consideration. It's weird because nothing really changed for them, but going from a NC game appearance to a losing season is pretty remarkable.

Bill Callahan did wonders with Nebraska, and I don't think Po Belini has gotten it quite back yet.....

Tennessee.

Who the Starkville is Josh McDaniels?

Denver Broncos equivalent to Lane Kiffin in Tennessee.  Young, brash coach who thought he was going to turn the world upside down.  Pretty sure they both won the same number of games in their first (and only) year.

Personal or program?

Personal:

Mike Price certainly deserves a mention.  Got fired before he even signed his contract, much less coached a game.  Now forever banished to the wilds of UTEP and she wasn't even very good looking.  That's a pretty impressive bonfire.  Honorable mention to Mike Dubose for taking a 10-3 SEC champ team all the way to 3-8, probation, and a HC job at Luverne, AL high school (in the second smallest of the state's classes).  Currently toiling away (for probably a few more days) at the disaster known as the Memphis Tigers.

Program:

Houston Nutt, Ole Miss.  They were never a great program, but they had respectable runs under Tubberville and Cutcliffe.  Even Orgeron left talent at the place.  Now they're a laughing stock that will be lucky to attract even a respected assistant to be their head coach.  Most likely, they'll end up with a retread or a noname.  It will take a decade or more to approach a norm of 5-7 win seasons.

A possible candidate to unseat him in the future will be Gene Chizik at Auburn.

Fulmer was 5-7 his last season, so the decimation began before Kiffin and 2009.

He was in Atlanta not long before that.  His last season was horrid, but he stacked up great recruiting classes, and finished high nationally nearly every year he was there.

Kiffin was there one year, brought almost nothing positive to the program, and then burned the mother down on his way out.

For speed destruction, amongst those listed, it's Kiffin, going away.

Personally, I think Cerdo should be an option, for what he can do to a tailgate by noon.

Has to be McDummy. Had a pretty good offense and just needed to build a defense. Two of the most retarded drafts ever and some stupid ass trades that really set us back. We trade Cutler, Hillis and Marshall and didn't get aMm in return.

I went with Kiffin because the collateral damage was huge.  Kiffin wrecked the Raiders and exposed Al Davis as Captain Queeg.  His hire of his father wrecked what was left of the Bucs.

I agree that once the smoke clears Joe Paterno will win the prize; his record is a sham and karma will have him remembered for turning a university and program into a NAMBLA party zone.

Actually, we have forgotten Ron Meyer.  Killed SMU and the SWC all at once.

WMus can't get no love? Then again, guess the wheels were already 3/4 of the off of that cart when CUM left to spend time with his family and take care of his health whore himself out to ESPN while jockeying for the tOSU gig.
