The victims were identified as Michael McCrimmons, 19, and Diondre Johnson, 19, both former graduates of Parkview High School in Springfield.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a sport-utility vehicle carrying the football players and two other people ran off the westbound lanes into the median cables about 2:30 a.m. Friday near the 31-mile marker about two miles east of Sarcoxie.
The patrol said Diondre Johnson was thrown from the vehicle, which was driven by Jeremy W. Johnson, 19, Harrison, Ark.
Jeremy Johnson was walking across the eastbound lanes to the highway shoulder when he was hit by an eastbound car. He was transported by helicopter to Freeman Hospital West, Joplin.
A tractor-trailer unit struck the sports-utility vehicle, killing McCrimmons. Another passenger, Patrick M. Holt, 19, Benton, Ark., a member of the golf team at Missouri Southern, was airlifted to St. John’s Hospital, Springfield. He was listed in serious condition there.
