Expectations/Was this season a success?
« on: January 07, 2012, 11:04:05 AM »
Someone clearly made this point in the game thread.  Are your expectations soaring out of control?  We handled a top 10 team at a clearly neutral site, and yet it slightly disappointing from the standpoint of us losing an opportunity to thoroughly dominate them.

Just some facts from this season:

We played the whole season without our 1st team All-SEC RB, several games without 1 DE, and a few games without both DE's.  Many people griped about Tyler Wilson, but Tyler broke the season record for yards in a season, and only threw 6 ints all season.  We played the year with a hobbled Greg Childs, who obviously wasn't up to the same form that had him as our best WR in '09 and '10.

Yet we won 10 games in the regular season, and finally showed up to play in a big game.

So, was this season a success?  I say it was.

Without a doubt it was.

But, it only leaves you thirsty for more.  And when we DO win that NC, we will still want more.
What'll you two have?
Just some plain white toast.
And for you sir?

Yes

It's nice that we won 11 games and still had glaring issues that need mending. It says a lot about this team and coaching staff that they can over come injuries, lack of experience, a tragic death of a teammate, and perhaps even the perception that we don't belong with the big boys. We earned respect nationally this season and should finish in the top 5 which should not be taken lightly. We spend so much time looking ahead we miss enjoying the present...I think that is what the aforementioned poster was eluding to in the game thread. I'm guilty.
And so it was that later

Turned a whiter shade of pale

I don't see how any sane fan could say this season was disappointing.

It's like getting a blowjob from a cute chick.  frick yeah it's nice, & definitely gets the job done.

But it's not a night of crazy monkey-sex with super-model, nymphomaniac triplets.

I'm happy as a Hog fan, but I'm not satisfied.  We still have that NC to win.  And then after we do that, we need another.  And then another.

Absolutely, considering we lost Knile, had to replace Mallett, and had a crappy o-line that couldn't consistently run block or protect Wilson. I felt we'd win 9 games this year because of those factors. It will be interesting to see who starts next year alongside Swanson and Bailey.

I wish the games against LSU and Alabama could have been closer, but it's not like anyone else came close to beating them, either (except for LSU edging out Alabama). I was bothered by the near-misses at Ole Miss and Vandy right after those games, but those games happen from time to time and the team showed its resiliency. I also loved the blowout of SC--it made us look us look better when they dominated both Clemson and Nebraska.

Resoundingly yes!

We were breaking in a new OLine on top of everything else you stated in the first post.

Think of how we are set up for next year.  If we land DGB and keep everyone like Gragg and Knile, we will essentially be putting out an offense of 11 possible starters that ALL have the dream and possible capability of playing football on Sundays.  Cobi and Gragg are looking like top 2 round material for sure and if Knile is back and healthy next year - watch out!

We will be sticking a D Line out there of upperclassmen, finally, all the way across.  I still believe DD Jones is capable of becoming another Albert Haynesworth.  We will be 8 strong across the front 4 and all will have now had multiple years in the weight room and at the training table.

The Mitchell kid is playing fantastic, we're still building a true SEC back seven and we have trouble free and reliable special teams specialists.

We will start out highly ranked and with the 2 biggest media darlings in the country coming to our place.

Get your ticket situation for RRS and WMS resolved early, my friends.

I predicted 11 wins with a victory over LSU in Baton Rouge. If I had to guess I would have homer'd out and said we would win our bowl game, and have 12 wins at the end of the year.

Looking back, 11 wins in the regular season was wishful thinking on my part as I didn't know enough about LSU to see them as the best team in the nation.

10 wins in the regular season, with both loses on the road coming to the current #1 and #2, plus a rare bowl win, giving us an even rarer 11 win season -- I'd call that a success.

For it not to be considered a success you'd have to be a debbie downer of the highest magnitude.

Next year I want to win em all.

I know what you're trying to say, but this is the kind of thinking that can lead to fanbases getting themselves in to trouble.  We were one of the top 2 teams in the SEC, along with KY, and getting ranked every year simply based of reputation alone in basketball in the 90s and even to the beginning of this century.  We started acting like bitches because simple top 25 permanence wasn't alone and we were going through a *GASP* down cycle.  We're still wandering out of that mess today in 2012.

Let's win the SEC.  Winning a National Championship is a question of luck (TN in 1998 or so), being in the right place at the right time when others lose (LSU in 2007) and all the other timing working out with media love like DIDN'T happen for UGA and Auburn at different points between 2000 to 2005.

We are doing fantastic and they are still building the foundation.  I'm pleased as a person who actually goes to every damn game I can go to can possibly be.

We haven't been unranked since 2009.

We'll be a preseason top 10 team next year.

We won a bowl game with DEFENSE.

We have Heisman contenders at both QB and RB.

We have the perfect schedule next year.

Everybody just get ready.

We'll have to replace 2 GAs. I've seen Richard Owens mentioned by recruits as a good recruiter, so that sucks:

cbahn Chris Bahn
No official word on McGee's staff, but appears he'll take Reggie Johnson and grad assts Brandon Sharp/Richard Owens to UAB from UA.

Oh, Starkville yes!!

We went into this season with a lot of question marks.  Wilson was one of them.  Never been the MAN before, and we had no clue how he was going to do.  We had genuine fear at linebacker.  Small, undersized at that position, and we all knew what we were dealing with there.  Without Knile Davis, and with DJ coming off a severe injury, we had no idea how we would perform there.

Then Bama waxed us, and the season looked like it may be lost.

Yet, here we were in December, let down that we were ONLY playing the 8th ranked team in the BCS.  That we were ONLY going to the Cotton Bowl.

And last night we were a little let down that we didn't curb stomp a pretty damn good team.

This is what makes a successful season, a successful program, a program on the rise.

Many of us have been looking to 2012 as THE year.  I don't see anything that has changed other than they did better this year than I expected.

Very successful season this was.  Great job, Hogs.

Satisfied - ABSOUTELY!!

All the good points brought up in this thread are spot on! I am even more pumped by the coaching, speed, the depth and in coming recruits. After watching the Defense play last night with the most discipline they have shown in the BMFP era I will be the first to admit my skepticism of our new DC is going away!

I don't think there is much question it was a success.

Sure, I would have loved to destroy KSU last night. Those games against Ole Miss and Vandy weren't pretty. We had some issues on the O-line, the entire defense at times and the run game.

But we lost 2 games. Those teams play each other Monday for the NC. We're 21-5 the last 2 years and all the loses we're to top 5 teams.

Someone mentioned 2012 could be THE year. Under Petrino, we will be able to say that more years than not because he's going to bust his ass to make it happen. And if he does win a NC, he's going to come back the next year even harder. Because he's a winner. And that's what winners do.

Before we won the NC in 1994, it always felt like it was just a matter of time.

I now have that feeling about the football program.  Pieces have to fall in place, and sure there's always a little luck needed. But now it's just a matter of time.

I thought we would be 10-2 before the season and that is what they did so they met my expectations. I really want to win the SEC because doing that separates the contenders from the pretenders but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a good season that falls short of that. This was a very good season and hopefully we finish up recruiting with some bigtime players.

I predicted (to myself) we'd go 10-2 regular season, and win our Bowl Game.  Got that right.

Huge success as a season.  We've gotten better every year with Petrino.  We tack on another win next year, no telling where we'll end up.
