It's Ryan Perrilloux's fault.

There were some intelligent people alledging before the season even started that there was some kind of racial division in the LSU program regarding the Jefferson/Jarrett Lee QB pecking order.  Then Jefferson had his little Marine head kickfest and it was all settled for a while.

Now the kid who went 9-0 sat on the sideline watched Jefferson put up a huge FAIL.  It reminded me of the Mustain/Casey Dick LSU saga.

I think there were lots of politics happening in that program.

That thought ran through my head last night, but dismissed it. Living in Louisiana for nine years, I would have to agree with you.

Isn't there always a racial angle and a quarterback controversy at LSU?

It seems like the norm down there.

I may not be as smart as Les Miles, but I'll offer this:

Jefferson may have ben the better choice for LSU as long as they were playing against defenses made up of mere mortals.  He's athletic, hard for most teams to defend, and had a few Cam-like moments of breaking down a defense, then pulling up to hit an open receiver on the run.

But against Bama, Lee might have been a better choice.  Who knows?

We know Jefferson running the option again Bama looked awful.  On drop backs, at least in the first half, he frequently had time to throw and had open receivers but didn't put the ball there.  Once Bama got up 12, then 15, they blitzed more and he looked even worse passing.

It's not like Lee's chopped liver.  Somehow they managed to beat the Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl champs with him taking some snaps.

Last night, they showed Lee's career stats against Bama. It was something like 1 TD to 7 Int's. That may have something to do with why Miles never let him see the field. Still, Jefferson was obviously ineffective, and it wouldn't have hurt to see if Lee could have provided any kind of offensive spark.

Miles was quoted last night that the reason Lee didn't play was because he wouldn't have been able to avoid Alabama's pass rush. Maybe so, but he didn't even bother to try to find out.

My dad's an LSU alum and he thinks Miles stuck with JJ just to stick it to all the fans and those in the media criticizing JJ for the bar fight. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but that's his theory, and he and a lot of other fans have been angry with Miles ever since Lee was benched. There must be some sort of weird antagonistic relationship Miles has with the media and the fans down there that we don't know about if that's the case.

That fanbase is full of ingrates. They still hate Saban for leaving and then returning to the college game, even though he brought them a championship and made them relevant again. He laid the foundation for their current success. Ridiculous.

Yeah...but Jefferson, he was able to avoid the pass rush really well.  :hmmm:

It is still hellarious to think some fans blame a player five years removed, more than a coach. Gee that sounds familiar.

Les Miles had no game plan. He relied on the fact that he had held Bama to 6 points in Novemember, and they were playing in LSWHO's backyard. LSU's defence is great, but Bama wanted it more and so did Saban.

There are some coaches who will never have a team with great QB play.

Les Miles is one of those coaches.

Lee has 1 TD and 7 INTs against Bama in his career.

As hard a time as Jefferson had in getting away from the Bama rush, I don't think

That being said, why they didn't run screens and quick hitting passes to slow down that rush I don't know.  That slowass 80s option stuff got strung out every time, and those big backs of LSU's aren't option backs in the mold of a Rouse or Malone.

Bobby Herbert went after Miles in the postgame press conference over not playing Lee.

Russell Shepherd tweeted he only played 3 plays the whole game.  There's lots of controversy on that team.

I don't understand this sentiment. He had a QB drafted number one in the NFL draft.

That guy turned out to be a bust but he was pretty fricking effective in college.

Disagree. Russell was Miles' Matt Jones. He was good at just making aMm up and had the size to do aMm other QBs couldn't do. Went to the pros and got exposed for poor work ethic habits and drankin' this aMm

I was wondering where he was.  LSU lost b/c they never went deep with Shepherd or Randle.  Same reason why we looked like crap on offense against Bama.

When the other team has NFL dbacks and LBers that will tackle everything within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage, you HAVE to go deep a few times at least to loosen them up.  Especially when your WRs are faster than their dbacks.

With DGB and Gardner (and Funderburke) next year, I'm sure we're going to try to get their corners in man on our big boys and let that different in height help us get some deep balls.  Those guys may be able to cover Adams and Wright, but they can't cover guys 9 inches taller without help.

Agree.  You have to at least try.  First series of the game, Florida went deep on Bama for a 70+ yard TD.

Of course, they didn't do much else, but they tried.  At that's one more TD than LSU scored on them in 8 quarters.

They are too fast to go lateral on if you let all their guys cheat up.  There are too many up there to throw "underneath" on (because there is no underneath with them; their front 4 is so good, their linebackers can back up and take everything there away).  You have to test them deep and essentially say, "if you want to cheat up with your safetys and play your corners one-on-one against us, they better be great and they better be right every single time."

Otherwise, it's like you're going 11-on-14 out there.

Still, Jefferson was obviously ineffective, and it wouldn't have hurt to see if Lee could have provided any kind of offensive spark.

Included in those stats are his performance in the 11/5 game.  Lee started and when he was pulled for Jefferson he had completed 5 passes.  3 to LSU and 2 to Alabama.

I understand Miles' reasoning.  In his wildest wet dream, Lee couldn't beat Alabama.  For all of Jefferson's fail, he had some escape potential.  Lee would have stood no chance.

Having said that, Les should have made the switch.  If not at the half, at least at the start of the 4th.  It was clear that  Jefferson wasn't going to get it done, both Lee and Jefferson are gone after this game, and you're playing for the freaking national championship.  There is no tomorrow, no reason to save anything.  If Lee comes in and throws three pick-6s, you're no worse off and you don't have to live with the forever speculation about what might have been.

Truth is, Saban took Les to school last night and it was a Phd level course.  There's a gif making the rounds showing Jefferson with a dazed and confused look on his face.  Les had the same look....
