Razorbacks claim first sweep of Mean Green hockey

After a month long break, the UNT ice hockey club (22-3) returned home Friday and Saturday to face off against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Previously beaten only once in 23 games by Texas A&M in late October, the Mean Green, a Division II team in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, fell to the Razorbacks, a Division III team, in a pair of losses over the weekend.

“They came better prepared than we did,” head coach Neil Sheehan said. “They’re a very good team. We just need to be stronger.”

Friday
After a scoreless first period, Arkansas forward Johnny Stromp scored the first goal of the game 31 seconds into the second period. Stromp and forward Marcel Toure would add one goal each to give the Razorbacks a 3-0 lead after two periods.

After an Arkansas power play goal, UNT answered with a goal by forward David Wirth, avoiding its first shutout loss of the season. Arkansas added another goal to take a 5-1 win.

“I played high school hockey with a lot of the guys on the Arkansas team,” forward Brett McCoy said. “It always makes it a little more exciting when they’re your friends.”

Saw a couple of dirty trips by UNT, but that's not too out of the ordinary.
Any more people show up they may have to put some seats in that place.

There are 2 "rinks" at the StarsCenter.  The other one - where a bunch of 40-something spares were playing an I-league game - had a large bleacher area.

Our kids, and the entire coaching staff, looked sharp as Starkville.  And I'm not just saying that as a biased Hogs fan.  I couldn't believe UNT is a division above us... they looked like they'd be more at home playing on a rooftop in a Kevin Smith movie (ok, that was a little biased).

This really does no justice to the intensity our boys played.  Very physical game, and lot of fun to watch.  I think it was in the 3rd, one of our boys checked the aMm out of a UNT player, and he must have gone straight up in the air 8 or 10 feet, end over end.  It was almost Dallas Washington-esque to witness.  Everyone went "OOHHHHH!!"  And of course, that wasn't recorded.

Hadn't eaten all day and was running late getting to the game.  Got there at 8:35 and noticed they had a decent looking concession stand open, so went to check out the rinks first, see which one we were on, etc.  Head back over to the concession stand about 8:45 to get something before the game starts - now it's CLOSED.

A single food vending machine by the front door, full of nothing but... ice cream.
