Went to school for undergraduate in the state of Missouri. The first month I was there, some guys in the dorm said, "want a pop?"

I wondered what the frick they were talking about. I had to ask a lot of internal questions before I answered them and realized they were talking about a Coke.

Jesus.

A pop. Why didn't Sherman go north?

RC?

RC cola and a Moon Pie?
Jerry Clower said you could break a trade embargo with a ship full of moon pies followed by a ship full of RC.

More evidence that Mizzou is a poor fit, culturally, in the SEC. Now, pass me a coke.

WTF Boone County?

Notice the blue around Tulsa area.... Boone County for years was very strong lean to Pepsi products and the distributor was and still is, based in Tulsa which is also blue.  Might be a correlation, might not.  In any event, 'pop' isn't in my vocabulary and my adult beverage will never be Jack and Pepsi. Counties south of us start leaning to 'coke' as the strong CocaCola distributorships take over.  Or not....

WTF Boone County?

I believe their figures may be inakrit.

Lived in Boone County until I was 19, and "coke" was always the preferred term with pretty much everyone I knew.

I'm referring to Madison in AR.  I think there's some like Christian, Stone and Barry in MO that might be called Booger up there, too.

Mean doin's in Madison back in the 70s-80s.  Sheriff suspicioned to be killed, stuff like that.

I like reading about the folk vernacular; and bullshitting with old timers.

Yeah, that's right.  Ain't that where they filmed "Winter's Bone?"  I'm pretty sure they used the West Plains sale in the cattle auction scene with 'Thump'.  Bought some cows there one time.  Good movie, but leaves you desiring a bath.

I would love to read some history behind what makes that map what it is.  For example, why such an huge number of "soda" drinkers in the St Louis and significant surrounding area?  I assume there's a correlation somehow to the Mississippi River.  Also, Wisconsin.  There could almost be a border war there.

Me too. Some of the little fluctuations or changes county-by-county can be tossed away, but the St. Louis thing definitely is an anomaly. Theres something to it.

Missour-ah:  Pop
Missour-ee:  Soda

Both of them say it "wrong."

Oh god. It's Missour-ee. The Missourah aMm has been adopted by the flatlanders (North of I-44, of course). It's especially bad in politicians who try to gain some type of 'rural cred'. It's the most vile of many vile things about my adopted home state.

North of 44?  I've heard PLENTY of patients from the bootheel and SW MO use "Missour-ah."  As best I can tell, it's a rural/urban thing.  Folks from STL, KC, and to a lesser extent Columbia & Springfield use "Missour-ee."  Everybody else does it the other way.  aMm, I've even heard folks from southern IL use it.
