Villanova at Arkansas- Game 3
« on: February 19, 2012, 12:46:32 PM »
Get your brooms ready.

The Hogs go for the sweep today with sophomore righty Barrett Astin on the mound.  Last season Astin made 27 appearances but only had 3 starts.  He had a 5-2 record, a 2.72 ERA, and opponents hit .257 against him.

Villanova will counter with sophomore right-hander Max Almonte.  In 2011 he made 11 appearances and 5 starts, with a 2-0 record and a 4.63 ERA.  Now onto the question that you're all wondering.  Is Max Almonte related to Danny Almonte of Little League World Series infamy?  I don't know yet.  I did, however, pose this very question to the official Villanova baseball twitter account.  When I know, you'll know.

Arkansas Starting Lineup
Bigham 2B

I don't know, I missed it.  Is he related to Blake?

Calbi K's looking on three pitches.  1 out.

Sciacca with a chopper to short and Carver throws him out. Wide throw but nice job of Fic to dig it out.  2 down.

Fleishman with a flare into shallow center and Jacob Morris makes a great diving catch for the out! That was really nice.  Inning over.

Bottom 1st

Bigham hits the first pitch back up the middle for a single.

Mahan at the plate.  Bigham steals 2nd (might have been a hit and run) and he's safe easily.  With this catcher I really think we could run about every pitch if we wanted to.

Mahan singles into left and Bigham scores! 1-0 Hogs!

Ficociello lays down a bunt, he beats the throw and once again Nova throws it away.  This advances the runners to 2nd and 3rd.  Then, Nova's throw back to the infield was wild and Mahan scored while Ficociello moved to 3rd.  0 outs.  That was weird.  Bates coming up.  2-0 Hogs.

Bates does it again today with a 2-run blast over the wall in center!  4-0 Hogs!

Reynolds singles to the hole in deep short.  Nice diving stop by Calbi to knock it down, but he didn't have a chance.  And honestly, they probably want to throw to 1st base as little as possible.

Reynolds grounds to 2nd, they get the force there, but don't make a throw 1st.  Runner on 1st, 1 out.

Wise K's swinging.  2 outs.

Morris at the plate.  Vinson steals 2nd easily, but it was ball 4 anyway.  Runners on 1st and 2nd.

Carver flies out to center.  Inning over.

Hogs lead 4-0 after 1.

Jones K's swinging on 3 pitches.  1 out.

Schrenk with a big chopper to short, Carver charges and makes the play.  2 outs.

Wager with a line drive towards right and Bigham makes a nice jumping catch at 2nd.  Inning over.

Bottom 2nd

Bigham grounds to 3rd, the throw to 1st is high, and the fielder has to come off the bag.  Bo is safe and that's the 3rd error already on Nova.

Mahan at the plate.  The pitcher throws to first and.. WAIT FOR IT... the ball gets away and Bigham advances to 2nd.  Another error.

Mahan grounds out to short.  1 out.

Ficociello rips a liner into right center and Bigham scores! 5-0 Hogs!

Bates grounds to 2nd and they get the force there.  Runner on 1st, 2 outs.

Reynolds grounds to short and they flip to 2nd for the force.  Inning over.

Hogs lead 5-0 after 2.

Carr K's looking.  1 out.  All three Nova leadoff men have struck out.  So after a strikeout we don't throw the ball around the infield.  Just goes right back to the pitcher.

Clark walks.

Zeck K's swinging. 2 outs.

Calbi walks.  Runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs.

Sciacca walks as well.  Bases loaded, 2 outs.

Fleishman coming up.  He hit the grand slam in game 1 after 3 straight walks.  Now we've got movement in the bullpen.

Fleishman K's swinging!  Way to come back and close out the inning by Astin.  Inning over.

Bottom 3rd

Vinson draws a leadoff walk.

Wise at the plate.  Wild pitch, the ball gets away from the catcher, and Vinson moves up to 2nd.  7th wild pitch of the weekend for Nova.

Wise draws a walk and Almonte is done.  Pitching change for Nova.  New guy is junior lefty Matt Longfield.

Morris wanted to bunt, but Longfield walked him.  Bases loaded, no outs.

Carver walks and Vinson trots home.  6-0 Hogs.  Bases still loaded.  Nobody is throwing in the Nova bullpen.  Apparently this is part of the plan.

Bigham flies out deep to center.  Wise tags and scores and Morris moves from 2nd to 3rd.  Runners on the corners.  7-0 Hogs.

Mahan singles into right!  Morris scores and Carver goes 1st to 3rd.  Runners on the corners, 1 out. 8-0 Hogs.

Ficociello flies out to shallow left.  2 outs.

Bates flies out to right.  Inning over.

Hogs lead 8-0 after 3.

Jones K's swinging.  1 out.  That's 6 K's for Astin and 4 in a row.

Schrenk grounds out to Reynolds.  2 outs.

Wager grounds out to Carver at short.  Inning over.  Nice 7 or 8 pitch inning there for Astin.

Bottom 4th

New pitcher for Nova is junior righty Stephen Ostapeck.

Reynolds hammers a double off the wall in left center.  Looked like the outfielder made a bad play on the ball and just didn't know where it was.

Vinson at the plate.  Reynolds steals 3rd and they don't even throw down there.  Hogs have 7 steals in 8 tries this weekend.

Vinson K's swinging.  1 out.

Wise draws a walk.

Morris is HBP.  Bases loaded, 1 out.

Carver lines out to left center.  Reynolds tags up and scores.  2 outs.  9-0 Hogs.

Bigham singles into left and a run scores.  10-0 Hogs.  Runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs.

Mahan singles into right. Morris scores and Bigham goes 1st to 3rd.  11-0 Hogs. Runners on the corners.

Ficociello hits one to right, the first baseman knocked it down but couldn't make the play.  Bigham scores.  12-0 Hogs.

Bates comes to the plate with 9 RBI on the weekend.
He gets hit by the first pitch.  Bases loaded.  Bosco is pinch running for Bates.

Astin now throwing beside the dugout to stay loose.

Reynolds singles into left.  Mahan and Ficociello score.  14-0 Hogs.

Villanova is finally making a pitching change. Thank God.  The freshman Tyler Radtke is taking over.  He also pitched on Friday.

Vinson pops up to the shortstop.  Inning over.

Hogs lead 14-0 after 4.

I don't mind playing these scrub teams to start off the season. It's good to be blowing them away. If we were winning by only a few runs or less, I would be concerned.
Chance favors the prepared mind.

Programming alert:  Villanova is flying home this evening on a commercial flight so this game has a curfew.  They won't start an inning after 4 or 4:15.  I highly doubt we play all 9 today.

Everybody but Astin and Wise are playing a different position now.  Lots of subs and changes.

Carr K's looking.  1 out.

Clark gets hit on the wrist.

Zech at the plate.  Wild pitch and Clark moves to 2nd.

Zech grounds to Reynolds (now at short) and he makes a nice play for the out.  2 down.

Calbi grounds out to Masters.  Inning over.

Wise pops one up to the 3rd baseman, apparently he lost it, and the ball dropped in fair territory.  Wise ends up at 2nd with a double.

Conor Costello makes his 2nd at bat as a Hog.  Costello singles and Wise scores.  15-0 Hogs.

Had some internet problems, so I missed a little.  Hogs have runners on the corners, 1 out.

Gunns one hard to the 2nd baseman and they double up Costello at 1st.  Inning over.

Hogs lead 15-0 after 5.

I know www.arkansasrazorbacks.com has complete stats.  That's where I get stuff.

Astin is done after 5 innings and giving up 0 runs and 0 hits.  Junior lefty Trent Daniel is now making his season debut.

Sciacca lines out sharply to Anderson, who is playing 3rd now.  1 out.

Fleishman singles into right.  First hit of the day for Nova.

Jones flies out to Costello in center.  2 outs.

Pinch hitter for Schrenk lines a single into right.  Runners on the corners.

Wager grounds out to 3rd.  Inning over.

Fun stat time: Arkansas has scored double-digit run totals in the first three games of a season for the first time since the 1997 season.

Bottom 6th

Bleeker (now playing 1st) draws a leadoff walk.

Bosco grounds up the right side and they get Bleeker with the force at 2nd.  1 out.

Reynolds draws a walk.

Serrano K's  2 outs.

We have a final from Austin, TX- Duke 5 Texas 2.   :notexas:

Wise is HBP to load the bases.

Costello pops out in foul ground outside first base.  Inning over.

Hogs lead 15-0 after 6.

No.  They were pretty bad in the Big East last season, and the Big East sucks at baseball.

Lefty sophomore Jeff Harvill is the new pitcher for the Hogs.

Nelson walks.

Clark at the plate.  Wild pitch and Harvill moves to 2nd.

Another walk.

Someone else reached by either HBP or walk.  Bases are loaded with 0 outs.  Doubt Harvill hangs around long.

Calbi flies out to Bosco in right.  Nelson tags up and scores.  15-1 Hogs.  1 out.

Sciacca walks and the bases are loaded again.  That's it for Harvill.  Taking over will be freshman lefty Michael Gunn.  He actually had an at bat earlier in the DH spot.  He pitches and plays OF.

Rambaud with a chopper to short and the Hogs turn the 6-4-3 double play!  Inning over.

New pitcher for Nova is freshman righty JB Kole.  We've already faced him once this weekend.

Anderson grounds out to short. 1 down.

Masters lines a single into left.  He and Costello have both gotten their first hits as Razorbacks today.

Gunn K's swinging.  2 outs.

Bleeker slams a double off the wall in left center, they wave Masters home, and they get him at the plate.  Not sure if he lost sight of the ball or what, but that looked weird.  Didn't really slide.  Inning over.

Hogs lead 15-1 after 7.
