Former Arkansas Razorback pitcher Jess Todd was promoted Sunday to the Springfield Cardinals roster, and is scheduled to start Wednesday night at Arvest Ballpark against the Naturals.

Todd was a second-round selection of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2007 June draft. The 22-year old Kilgore, TX native started 2008, his first professional season, with the Advanced-A Palm Beach Cardinals in the Florida State League, where he posted a 3-0 record and a 1.65 ERA in seven games (four starts), earning him distinction as the St. Louis Cardinals organizational pitcher of the month for April. Last season, Todd posted a 4-1 record and a 2.78 ERA in 16 games (7 starts) for the Batavia Muckdogs in the New York Penn-League..........[more]

Coaches dealing with roadblock   05/06/2008
http://www.nwanews.com/adg/Sports/224925/

Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino isn’t among the seven Razorbacks coaches out on the road this spring making in-person recruiting evaluations.

Not after what happened last year.

Last spring, reports of Alabama Coach Nick Saban’s “bumps” into prospects in Florida during the evaluation period, when conversations between coaches and recruits is prohibited, spurred his coaching colleagues into action.

The SEC sponsored an NCAA proposal to take head coaches off the road during the evaluation period, which runs from April 15 to May 31, and the legislation is now in effect..........[more]

Jones' makeup perfect fit for Cowboys   05/06/2008
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/......ry?columnist=mosley_matt&id=3381987

Jones, who played at the same Tulsa high school (Booker T. Washington) as current NFL players R.W. McQuarters, Mark Anderson and Robert Meachem, seemed slightly amused by all the attention he received during the minicamp. On Saturday morning, Emmitt Smith stopped by Valley Ranch to visit with the rookie running back on his way to play golf. He ended up providing pointers on how to separate from linebackers during pass routes.

"I think Mendenhall is a very good back," Smith said. "I just think Felix has a lot more hip movement, and he reads and cuts in a fluid manner."

Jones, who idolized Smith and Barry Sanders while growing up in Oklahoma, was still smiling about the encounter a couple of hours later..........[more]

When Felix Jones arrived at Arkansas three years ago, he was a four-star recruit out of Tulsa, Okla. Yet, he still was the "other" back.

When he was drafted by the Cowboys last weekend, despite being a first-round pick, it became clear Jones again would be the "other" back. In fact, that's the main reason the Cowboys drafted him where they did.

But on Friday, at least for a day, all eyes were fixed on Felix Jones..........[more]

Cowboys' No. 1 draft pick makes 'smooth' entrance   05/03/2008
http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/story/620517.html

RVING -- Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spent a long portion of the rookie minicamp practice staring at the offensive players.

Jones got a first-time look at running back Felix Jones, dressed in No. 28, darting across the field taking handoffs and catching passes. He was surely getting a vision of the first-round pick adding big-play potential to an already impressive offense. He's the one he believes is his new "wow" player.

"He's smooth," Jerry Jones said. "You can see that he can run when he gets that ball. The most important thing that I saw out here today was just how smooth he looks when he's running and cutting.".........[more]

Alabama does damage with 2 outs   05/03/2008

Kent Matthes was happy to face the pressure of trying to drive in runners with two outs.

In fact, Alabama's junior right fielder was the grand marshal for a parade of clutch at-bats in Friday's 11-7 victory over Arkansas at Baum Stadium..........[more]

Diamond Hogs back in the hunt   05/02/2008
http://nwanews.com/nwat/Sports/64742/

Dave Van Horn's Razorbacks baseball squad seems to be heating up at just the right time.

A month ago, it appeared the Hogs were on the ropes and almost down and out as far as postseason play was concerned, but slowly and surely they seem to be turning things around..........[more]

The sad saga of Ryan Perrilloux   05/02/2008

Ryan Perrilloux came to LSU as Scout.com's Player of the Year for the Class of 2005 and was one of LSU's most heralded high school players to ever come out of Louisiana.

Arkansas' Mallett must sit out year   05/02/2008
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c......all/ncaa/05/02/mallett.arkansas.ap/

The NCAA says transfer quarterback Ryan Mallett must sit out a year before playing for the Razorbacks.

Arkansas had asked the NCAA to waive the requirement that Mallett sit out a year. Mallett transferred from Michigan after retiring coach Lloyd Carr was replaced by Rich Rodriguez.

Mallett must spend one year at school at Arkansas before being eligible to play for the Razorbacks. Mallett practiced with Arkansas this spring, but missed much of the spring practice with a thumb injury..........[more]

http://www.news-leader.com/app......?AID=/20080501/SPORTS0401/805010373

Arkansas battered six MSU pitchers Wednesday night for a 14-6 nonconference victory before 3,577 fans at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark.

MSU's pitchers combined to walk six, allow 13 hits and hit three batters. The Bears' defense didn't help the cause, committing two errors that led to four unearned runs.

All this after MSU had an early 4-0 lead, thanks largely to Josh Mazzola's three-run home run in the third inning..........[more]
