A palace coup finally got Frank Broyles this weekend, ending what might be the most powerful run anyone has ever had in big-time college athletics. FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. — Patrick Beverley scored 24 points and Sonny Weems added 19 to lead Arkansas over Ole Miss 83-66 today.
The Razorbacks (16-10, 5-7 Southeastern Conference) went on a 15-2 run after leading 39-38 at halftime, and Ole Miss never recovered. The Rebels (17-9, 6-6) began rushing shots and allowing Arkansas to shoot open 3-pointers.
There are now no teams in the SEC West above .500 in conference play..........[more]

Arkansas needs its newcomers to play more than a bit part in the Razorbacks’ pitching plans.
That has become clear as the sixth-ranked Razorbacks (4-2 ) begin their home season with a three-game series with Wisconsin-Milwaukee (0-0 ) at Baum Stadium. The series, originally scheduled to begin Friday, was pushed back because of cold weather and snow..........[more]

A university official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made, told The Associated Press school officials still expected Broyles to say this weekend that he would retire.
An airplane registered to the school's Board of Trustees -- dispatched to pick up Broyles in Chicago, where he was visiting a sick friend -- landed at Fayetteville's Drake Field late Friday afternoon but the athletic director was not aboard. An airport official said the plane's pilots dropped Broyles off in Springdale after being tipped that media were awaiting him at the Fayetteville field..........[more]

We can't say that we're entirely surprised at the news reports, which appear to be credible, that Frank Broyles is planning to retire later this year as athletic director of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
There's growing unrest in Razorback Nation, and that's a nightmare for any major college athletic program. When fans become unhappy, they become stingy..........[more]

DALLAS - Assuming he can avoid barefoot kicks, Darren McFadden is the Heisman Trophy favorite for 2007.
The season is more than six months away, but McFadden rehearsed accepting trophies Thursday night. He was officially presented with the Doak Walker Award that goes to the nation's top running back.
